TV-Series
Description
Atsushi Maeda, often called Acchan by his friends, is a male student in Class 1-2 at Gakubun High School. He is known around the school as a delinquent and is a member of a trio that includes his close friends, Mario and Ken Ken. His typical appearance is characterized by a slim build and a signature red hat that he wears frequently.
At the start of the story, Atsushi is presented as a narcissist who becomes easily irritated and jealous of anyone he perceives as being cooler or better than himself. This trait is immediately triggered by the arrival of the effortlessly cool Sakamoto. Atsushi, along with his friends, attempts to bully and intimidate Sakamoto using various pranks and schemes, but these plans are consistently thwarted by Sakamoto's calm and extraordinary responses, which only serve to draw more attention to his intended target. This failure to establish dominance fuels his frustration and deepens his initial resentment.
A pivotal event changes the course of their relationship. During a plot to seriously confront Sakamoto, Atsushi and his friends cause a small fire due to a mishandled cigarette, trapping themselves in a science lab. Sakamoto uses his unique abilities to rescue them from the dangerous situation. Following this incident, Atsushi's feelings towards Sakamoto become complex, evolving into a profound sense of admiration mixed with his original desire to best him. This ambiguous relationship marks the beginning of more frequent and positive interactions between them. Inspired by Sakamoto, Atsushi decides to quit smoking and, as a replacement habit, takes up blowing soap bubbles, often doing so to observe Sakamoto's techniques.
Throughout the series, Atsushi's role is that of a secondary character whose personal journey mirrors the transformative effect Sakamoto has on those around him. He walks a fine line between admiring Sakamoto and wanting to surpass him for the sake of his own pride. This internal conflict makes him susceptible to outside influence. In the final arc, the manipulative Fukase exploits Atsushi's unresolved jealousy and shame over not being able to meet Sakamoto as an equal, goading him into a more hostile position. This leads to a dramatic climax during the graduation ceremony for the third-year students, where a manipulated Atsushi attempts to attack Sakamoto with a metal bat as he delivers a speech. However, he ends up nearly falling from a balcony and is once again saved by Sakamoto. Following this rescue, Atsushi breaks down in tears, apologizes for his actions, and finally voices his jealousy, after which Sakamoto covers for him by playing the attack off as a staged part of the ceremony.
This final event leads to his most significant development. He fully accepts his admiration for Sakamoto without the need for rivalry. When Sakamoto announces he will be transferring to a school overseas, Atsushi has a tearful emotional farewell, shouting promises of lifelong friendship and vowing to study harder so he can meet Sakamoto again as an equal. In terms of notable abilities, beyond his reputation as a capable delinquent, Atsushi possesses no superhuman skills. However, having spent his formative years in the snowy mountains of Hokkaido, he has considerable experience with snow, which he once tried to use to gain an advantage over Sakamoto in a winter-themed challenge.
