Description
Petelgeuse Romanee-Conti is a central antagonist in the series, serving as the Sin Archbishop representing Sloth within the Witch Cult. His existence is defined by a profound contradiction: while he holds the title of Sloth, he is driven by an obsessive, manic devotion to what he calls diligence. He is a spirit, not a human, and has existed for over four hundred years, sustaining his life by transferring his consciousness into compatible bodies. His physical appearance in the main story is that of a gaunt, unnaturally thin man with deep green, neatly cut hair and wide, crazed eyes. He wears the dark purple robes of the Witch Cult and frequently engages in disturbing self-harming behaviors, such as biting his own fingers until they bleed or banging his head against surfaces, which he does to experience the sensation of being alive.
The personality Petelgeuse displays is one of extreme mania and volatility. He speaks in an erratic, theatrical manner, often contorting his body, tilting his head, and shouting his beliefs. His most famous exclamation is that his brain trembles. Despite his madness, he is highly intelligent and strategic, capable of orchestrating complex attacks. His core motivation is a fanatical love for the Witch of Envy, Satella. He believes his sole purpose is to repay the love he believes she has given him by acting in accordance with his Gospel, a prophetic book that guides his actions. He despises any form of inaction or laziness, which he considers the gravest sin, and expects total commitment from his followers, often brutally punishing them for perceived slothfulness.
This manic persona is a result of a tragic past. A hundred years before the main events, he was known simply as Geuse. At that time, he was a mild-mannered, rational, and kind-hearted spirit. He was a close friend to the elf Fortuna and acted as an uncle figure to her niece, a young Emilia, becoming like family to them. He was also acquainted with the Sage Flugel and even served as a manners tutor to the artificial spirit Beatrice. When the Witch of Vainglory, Pandora, and the Sin Archbishop of Greed, Regulus Corneas, attacked the elf village, Geuse attempted to protect his loved ones by releasing the Witch Factor of Sloth, which had been entrusted to him. However, he had no compatibility with it. Pandora used her authority to manipulate events, tricking him into killing Fortuna with his own power. The trauma and the corrupting influence of the incompatible Witch Factor shattered his mind, erasing his memories and transforming him into the insane zealot, Petelgeuse. He no longer recognizes Emilia or remembers his past life.
In the story, Petelgeuse serves as the primary obstacle in the third arc. His role is to enact an Ordeal, a plan dictated by his Gospel to test whether Emilia is a worthy vessel for the resurrection of the Witch of Envy, Satella. To this end, he leads his faction of the Witch Cult to attack the village of Arlam and the Roswaal mansion, resulting in countless deaths across multiple failed timelines. His conflict with the protagonist, Natsuki Subaru, is central. Petelgeuse initially mistakes Subaru for the Sin Archbishop of Pride and sees him as a potential recruit. However, as Subaru uses his Return by Death ability to learn the cult's plans, he becomes Petelgeuse's most determined enemy.
Petelgeuse's key relationships are largely defined by his madness. His primary devotion is to Satella, whom he believes loves him, though his dying moments reveal she has completely forgotten him, a rejection that breaks him. He has no memory of his former bond with Emilia, seeing her only as a test subject or a vessel. His relationship with fellow Archbishop Sirius, who proclaims herself his wife, is entirely one-sided, as he does not reciprocate her obsession. He maintains a group of select followers known as the Fingers. These individuals have absorbed fragments of his Witch Factor, making them compatible spare bodies he can possess upon death, which is the secret to his longevity.
Petelgeuse does not undergo positive development; rather, his tragedy is that he is a static representation of his own downfall. The narrative reveals the gentle person he once was, making his present state a cautionary tale about the corrupting nature of the Witch Factors. His final defeat comes when Subaru, with the help of Julius Juukulius, systematically eliminates all of his spare Finger bodies. In a desperate final attempt, he tries to possess Subaru, but is violently expelled from his body by the Witch of Envy, Satella, who rejects him. Crushed, burned, and dragged by a dragon carriage, he dies still crying out Satella's name, finally finding a permanent end.
His notable abilities are derived from the Authority of Sloth. His primary offensive power is the Unseen Hand, which allows him to materialize numerous invisible, hand-like appendages. These hands possess immense physical strength, capable of crushing stone and tearing through flesh with ease. They are invisible to almost everyone, with Subaru being a notable exception. He can also release a black, corrupting wave that induces madness and severe pain in his victims. As a spirit, he possesses the ability to forcibly transfer his soul into other bodies, a process he uses to cheat death. His followers, the Fingers, are specially prepared to serve as these vessels. He is also skilled in earth-based magic, capable of casting spells such as Ur Dona.
