Description
Ikta Solok, the main protagonist of the story, is a young man who appears, at first glance, to be the antithesis of a model soldier. He is lazy, unmotivated, and openly displays a strong preference for napping and pursuing women, particularly those older than himself. He lacks physical strength and any notable skill with a sword or gun, making him an unremarkable presence on the battlefield in a direct confrontation. He is often blunt, cynical, and brutally honest, which frequently lands him in trouble with superior officers and classmates who find his sharp tongue and lack of decorum offensive.

Beneath this slothful and lecherous exterior, however, lies a mind of exceptional strategic and tactical brilliance. Ikta is a genius who relies on logic, science, and an almost preternatural ability to predict his enemy's movements, a talent described as being able to put himself in an opponent's shoes. When forced into combat situations, his demeanor shifts entirely, and he becomes a calm, remarkable commander who consistently devises unorthodox and highly effective strategies to overcome overwhelming odds. Despite his own lack of martial prowess, his leadership has led to countless victories, earning him a reputation as an unbeatable commander.

Ikta's motivations are rooted in a deep-seated aversion to war and the militaristic nobility that perpetuates it. His greatest desire was never to be a soldier but to live a peaceful life as a librarian, pursuing his love for science. He fights not out of loyalty to the corrupt Katjvarna Empire, which he despises, but to protect his comrades and friends, a principle born from the trauma of his past. His father, a celebrated general, was executed as a war criminal for disobeying suicidal orders, and his mother died of illness after suffering a tragic fate as a war prize, leaving him an orphan. This history has left him deeply cynical, particularly of the ruling class and what he sees as the pointless sacrifice of soldiers for the sake of honor and incompetent commanders.

His role in the story begins when, after rescuing the young Princess Chamille from drowning, he is reluctantly granted the unwanted title of Imperial Knight, forcing him into the military career he sought to avoid. As the war with the neighboring Republic of Kioka intensifies, he is thrust into command, where his unorthodox methods consistently prove decisive. He forms a complex pact with Princess Chamille, agreeing to help her destroy the empire from within by leading its army to a calculated, ultimate defeat, so that a new, better system can rise from its ashes.

Key relationships define Ikta's life. His most important bond is with his childhood friend, Yatorishino Igsem. They are described as platonic life partners; while she is a supremely skilled and honorable warrior who acts as his sword and protector, he is the brain of their operation. They share a deep mutual trust, though their interactions are filled with snark and physical reprimands, usually when his laziness or lecherous comments go too far. He also has a tense but developing relationship with Torway Remion, a fellow cadet he initially bullies but later comes to trust and mentor as a capable soldier. His relationship with Princess Chamille is fraught, as she harbors an underage crush on him that he finds deeply uncomfortable, yet he respects her intellect and agrees to her radical plan to reform the empire.

Throughout the story's progression, Ikta undergoes significant development, much of it tragic. He suffers a physical toll, including severing his own left pinky finger three times as a ritual apology to gain the trust of an enemy tribe, and later sustaining a leg injury that forces him to use a cane. The most profound change occurs following the death of Yatorishino, which sends him into a catatonic, vacant state for two years, during which he is barely able to function. Eventually, he is brought back from this despair by looking at a painting from his past, reminding him of a promise he made to save Yatori, and he returns to command with a renewed sense of purpose.

Ikta's notable abilities lie almost entirely in his cognitive prowess. He is a master strategist and tactician who has never been defeated in a command position, using logic and an acute awareness of terrain and climate to his advantage. Beyond pure strategy, he possesses a natural gift for rhetoric, an unconscious talent for moving soldiers' hearts with his speeches and rallying them to seemingly impossible causes, which others call the talent of agitation. He is also a student of science and possesses the ability to predict events such as ambushes or geological phenomena like landslides based on observational clues. Despite his many flaws, his determination to minimize casualties and protect those close to him drives him to become the unwitting, slothful, yet invincible general he never wanted to be.
