Description
Mikitaka Hazekura, who also refers to himself as Nu Mikitakazo Nshi, is a supporting character in the fourth part of the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure series, Diamond is Unbreakable. He appears primarily in the story arcs I'm an Alien and Let's Live on a Transmission Tower. He presents himself as a 216-year-old extraterrestrial from the Magellanic Clouds who has come to Earth to find a new home for his people. His true nature is deliberately left ambiguous throughout the narrative—it is never confirmed whether he is genuinely an alien, a human with a delusion, or a Stand user whose ability resembles an alien power.
Mikitaka has a distinctive appearance. He is a teenage boy of average to above-average height with a slim build, fair skin, very long straight blonde hair that falls past his shoulders, green eyes, and pointed ears. He is initially depicted with a nose piercing, though this detail is absent later. He often wears a modified school uniform with a gakuran-style jacket.
His personality is calm, cooperative, and genuinely helpful, but he also displays a naive and literal-minded understanding of human customs. He accepts attempts to explain human behavior at face value, which sometimes leads to humorous misunderstandings, such as eating a tissue offered by Josuke. He speaks formally and uses phrases like "Earth hours" or asks if he is on Earth, reinforcing his claim of being an outsider. He is not confrontational and adapts easily to the people around him, showing a mild and pacific disposition. Despite his extraordinary claims, he rarely asserts his own opinions forcefully and prefers to maintain harmony.
Mikitaka's primary motivation is to locate a suitable planet for his people to inhabit. In Morioh, he approaches this goal with patience, believing that Earth might be a candidate. He also seems curious about human life and enjoys experiencing it, though he never abandons his stated mission. Later, he develops a loyalty to those he befriends, particularly Josuke Higashikata and Okuyasu Nijimura.
His role in the story is that of a temporary ally and occasional source of comic relief. He appears after being found by Josuke and Okuyasu lying inside a crop circle. The two initially suspect a prank, but Mikitaka convincingly demonstrates his shapeshifting ability. He assists Josuke in a gambling match against Rohan Kishibe by transforming into a perfect die to cheat, and later helps the group in other minor situations. He also appears during the search for the serial killer Yoshikage Kira, though his involvement is limited. He is not present for the final confrontation.
Key relationships include his friendship with Josuke and Okuyasu, who accept him despite their skepticism. They treat him as an odd but reliable companion. He also interacts briefly with Rohan, who is dismissive but intrigued by his ability. The only character who challenges his alien identity is his mother, who appears later and claims that Mikitaka has always made such claims, suggesting a human origin. Mikitaka counters by saying he has brainwashed her, but the truth is left unresolved.
Mikitaka experiences little character development in the traditional sense; his nature remains enigmatic from introduction to departure. He does not undergo a transformation or learn a lesson. Instead, the ambiguity of his identity is the defining characteristic, and the story intentionally refuses to resolve it. He eventually leaves Morioh, presumably continuing his search for a home.
His notable ability is named Earth Wind and Fire. It allows him to transform any part of his body, or his entire body, into any inanimate object. He can mimic the object's appearance, weight, and texture perfectly, and can also change his size drastically, shrinking to fit inside a coin or dice. He can separate into multiple components, such as turning into a plate of dishes. The ability has limitations: he cannot replicate objects more complex than his own body's strength, and he cannot mimic human faces because he claims all earthlings look alike to him. He also cannot transform into something larger than himself without losing mass. A significant weakness is that exposure to a siren or similar high-pitched sound causes him to break out in a painful red rash that persists until the sound stops.
It is never explicitly stated whether Earth Wind and Fire is a Stand, a natural alien power, or a manifestation of a psychic ability. The author, Hirohiko Araki, deliberately left the question open, noting that aliens are just barely acceptable within the world of JoJo. This ambiguity is a hallmark of the character and one of the most discussed mysteries in Diamond is Unbreakable.
