Description
Osamu Yamanami was born April 4, 2150. He enrolled at the National Space Defense Academy, becoming classmates and lifelong friends with Shuntaro Yasuda and Tetsutaro Ozaki. Yamanami and Yasuda later served together as officers in the Second Inner Planet War.

During the Great Garmillas War, Yamanami attained the rank of captain and commanded the Kirishima, flagship of the United Nations Cosmo Navy's Japanese Fleet under Admiral Juzo Okita. He witnessed First Contact with Garmillas, marking the war's beginning. As captain of Kirishima, flagship of the Combined Cosmo Fleet for Operation M, he executed the grim order to maintain course while the destroyer Yukikaze sacrificed itself to cover Kirishima's retreat. Approximately three weeks later, he saluted the departing Yamato from Kirishima's bridge alongside Admiral Ryu Hijikata before rescuing stranded UN Cosmo Marines on the Moon.

Following the Garmillas War, Yamanami took command of the Andromeda, the first Andromeda-class warship, rising to Commander of the Earth Federation Cosmo Fleet. In December 2202, during the 8th Floating Continent Recapture Operation, he ordered Andromeda's wave-motion guns fired, obliterating nearly the entire Gatlantis Empire fleet. Weeks later, on December 25, he led a fleet exercise near Jupiter when former crew members stole the Yamato. Yamanami detained non-defecting pilots and pursued Yamato in Andromeda. After Yamato evaded destruction through tactical ingenuity, Yamanami chose not to ram the ship, displaying grudging admiration for acting captain Susumu Kodai. He later released the detained pilots upon learning Earth's government authorized Yamato's mission.

During the Gatlantis Campaign in May 2203, Yamanami commanded his fleet against Gatlantis's invasion at Saturn. After the White Comet warped in, his wave-motion gun attack failed to penetrate its defenses, and hypergravity inflicted catastrophic damage on the fleet. The Apollo Norm, captained by Yasuda, sacrificed itself to push Andromeda to safety. Andromeda was towed to Earth for repairs in the time fault factory, where Yamanami insisted on human oversight despite automation. He later led the refitted Andromeda Kai in an assault on the White Comet's gravitational core to save the trapped Yamato, declaring his willingness to die to atone for lost lives. Admiral Hijikata's transmission intervened, urging him to stand down. The Yamato-class Ginga then assisted, enabling Yamato's escape. Andromeda Kai was destroyed during the retreat; Yamanami sustained severe injuries ejecting in a Black Bird fighter canopy.

After recovering, Yamanami resigned from active combat duty, feeling accountable for Earth Federation military strategies, particularly the wave-motion gun fleet plan. He continued as Supreme Commander, shifting focus to training and diplomacy. By 2205, he joined the Peace Corps delegation for a mission to Garmillas and Iscandar, commanding the 65th Escort Corps—a fleet symbolizing Earth's commitment to peace. Between 2205 and 2207, he oversaw Yamato's renovations at the Icarus Observatory for Operation DAD, a covert counter to Dezariam's invasion. In October 2207, as Dezariam attacked, he assumed command of Yamato to uncover their origins.
