TV-Series
Description
Herm Fule Mayo is a noble of the Saderan Empire holding the rank of viscount and serves as a military adviser and general within the Imperial Army. He is closely associated with Prince Zorzal, acting as one of his primary strategists during the conflict against the Japan Self-Defense Forces and the loyalist faction supporting Princess Pina Co Lada. Within the narrative, he functions as a secondary antagonist who embodies the Empire's refusal to accept the overwhelming technological and tactical superiority of the JSDF.
In terms of background, Herm Fule Mayo was once a member of the Rose Order of Knights, the same all-female order founded and led by Princess Pina. During his time as a knight trainee, he was notably more humble and cautious, often advising against reckless actions. However, this humility stemmed from a deep-seated lack of self-confidence and low self-esteem. As a member of a low-ranking noble family, he felt compelled to hold back in training and social interactions to create favorable relationships, particularly with Princess Pina, in the hopes of advancing his own social standing in the future. After leaving the Rose Order and eventually being elevated to the rank of viscount, his personality underwent a radical transformation.
Personality is the defining characteristic of Herm Fule Mayo. He is depicted as arrogant, haughty, and extremely egomaniacal. His ego is so pronounced that it actively prevents him from acknowledging reality, his own strategic failures, or the dire consequences of his decisions. He possesses a close-minded, inflexible attitude toward warfare, clinging to outdated tactics and scorched earth strategies even after witnessing the JSDF annihilate his forces with firearms, artillery, and airstrikes. He refuses to learn from experience or adapt to new technology, maintaining an ethnocentric belief in the Empire's inherent superiority. This extends to a deep-seated sexism, as he views Pina and her female knights as inferior, a bias rooted in the humiliation he felt as a young man when he had to defer to her. His driving motivation for continuing the hopeless war is not loyalty to the Empire, but a desperate, childish need to prove himself superior to Pina and to avoid admitting defeat to her.
Herm Fule Mayo's role in the story is to command the Imperial forces in their losing effort against the JSDF and the loyalist army. He is responsible for numerous tactical blunders, including suggesting the use of goblins to attack villages and ordering Imperial soldiers disguised as JSDF troops to commit atrocities. These plans fail miserably, often backfiring and turning the Imperial citizenry against Zorzal's cause. His incompetence is a key factor in the pro-war faction's eventual collapse.
His key relationships are primarily with Zorzal and Pina. He admires and respects Zorzal, as they share a mutual delusion and lack of rationality. He is also fiercely antagonistic toward Pina, driven by an obsessive desire to surpass her to compensate for his perceived childhood inferiority and his current wounded pride. This rivalry is his central personal conflict.
Throughout the story, Herm Fule Mayo shows little to no development until his final defeat. He remains doggedly persistent in his foolish strategies, even as his army is decimated. His arrogance only breaks after he is captured and imprisoned, and he learns of Zorzal's demise. Finally shamed and broken, he is unable to face Pina or his own family. Although he is ultimately spared execution due to his youth and the pleas of his uncle, he is stripped of his title of viscount and accepts his fate. In his defeat, his personality seems to revert to a more humble state, and he expresses regret for not having listened to Pina, acknowledging that his title and pride corrupted him.
Notable abilities include his training as a knight and his claimed skill as a military strategist. However, in practice, his abilities are consistently portrayed as woefully inadequate and counterproductive. His plans are easily anticipated and crushed by the technologically superior JSDF and the more competent loyalist forces. His most notable ability is arguably his overwhelming ego and his capacity for self-deception, which allow him to rationalize catastrophic defeats as necessary sacrifices for a victory that will never come.
