Description
Mavis Vermillon is the central protagonist of Fairy Tail Zero, a prequel that depicts her childhood and the events leading to the founding of the Fairy Tail guild. Her background begins in the year X679, when she is a six-year-old orphan living on Sirius Island. After the death of her parents, she is forced to work as a servant for the Red Lizard guild to pay off their debts. She endures harsh mistreatment from the guild master and his daughter, Zera, yet she remains cheerful and never cries, holding onto her parents' words that fairies never visit those who cry over their troubles.

When the rival Blue Skull guild attacks and destroys Red Lizard, Mavis rescues Zera from the rubble. The real Zera dies from her injuries, but Mavis, unable to process the loss, unconsciously creates a sentient illusion of Zera that only she can see and hear. The two girls live alone on Sirius Island for seven years. In X686, three treasure hunters arrive: Yuri Dreyar, Precht Gaebolg, and Warrod Sequen. They seek the sacred Sirius Orb, but Mavis reveals it was stolen by Blue Skull years earlier. She forms a truce with them to recover the orb, and the group travels to Magnolia.

In Magnolia, Mavis encounters the dark wizard Zeref Dragneel in a forest. She notices he is afflicted with a curse that kills all life around him against his will and, unaware of his identity, expresses sympathy for him. Grateful for her kindness, Zeref agrees to teach the treasure hunters magic suited to their abilities. Mavis herself learns the prototype spell Law from Zeref. After the group overthrows the Blue Skull guild, Yuri becomes possessed by the corrupted orb and merges with a skeletal dragon. To save him, Mavis casts Law, an incomplete version of what will later become Fairy Law. The spell successfully exorcises the evil magic, but its incomplete nature permanently halts her physical growth, freezing her appearance at the age of thirteen.

Following this sacrifice, Yuri reveals that Zera is an illusion. With Zera's own encouragement, Mavis accepts the truth, and Zera disappears. To honor her friend's memory and protect the people of Magnolia, Mavis and the three treasure hunters establish the Fairy Tail guild, with Mavis serving as its first guild master.

Mavis's personality is defined by a blend of childlike optimism and sharp intellect. Despite her traumatic childhood, she maintains a cheerful and gentle demeanor, and she holds a deep, unwavering belief in the existence of fairies, which inspires the guild's name. She is playful and sometimes reckless, often acting on impulse or a sense of fun. At the same time, she possesses a brilliant strategic mind, earning her the epithet Fairy Tactician. She can become serious and commanding when the situation demands, especially when protecting her friends or leading a battle. A distinctive quirk is her preference for going barefoot, a habit rooted in her childhood abuse and later embraced out of comfort.

Her motivations are driven by a desire to create a place where wizards can form strong bonds and protect one another. She values friendship and loyalty above all, and her founding of Fairy Tail is an expression of that ideal.

Within the story of Fairy Tail Zero, Mavis's role is that of a young leader and dreamer who transforms from a mistreated orphan into the founder of one of the most renowned guilds. Her key relationships include her illusory friend Zera, whose memory becomes the emotional core of the guild; the three treasure hunters Yuri, Precht, and Warrod, who become her first comrades and co-founders; and Zeref, who serves as her magical mentor and later becomes a figure of tragic love and shared curse.

Mavis's notable abilities include a natural talent for illusion magic, which she uses to create the apparition of Zera and to attempt deceptions. She also masters the prototype spell Law, which judges enemies based on the caster's perception of evil. Over time, she develops the three great Fairy Tail magics: Fairy Law, Fairy Glitter, and Fairy Sphere, though in Fairy Tail Zero she only demonstrates early versions of these powers. Her true strength lies in her tactical genius, allowing her to plan complex strategies that overcome much stronger opponents.
