Description
Laura Bodewig is a first-year transfer student at the IS Academy and the Infinite Stratos representative candidate for Germany. She is also the commander of the elite German special forces unit known as Schwarzer Hase, holding the rank of major. Laura was created as a genetically engineered super soldier, a designer baby raised from birth within the German military for the sole purpose of becoming a living weapon. This upbringing left her without normal childhood experiences or emotional development, and she was conditioned to view strength and combat proficiency as the highest virtues.

Physically, Laura is notably petite with long silver hair, a red right eye, and a black eyepatch covering her left eye. Beneath the eyepatch is a golden artificial eye, the result of a failed military experiment intended to enhance her compatibility as an IS pilot. The procedure malfunctioned and instead of improving her abilities, it became a constant source of sensory overload and hindered her performance, causing her to be viewed as a defective asset by her creators. At the IS Academy, she wears a modified version of the standard uniform that includes pants instead of a skirt, reflecting her pragmatic and militaristic background.

Laura initially displays a cold, aloof, and highly disciplined demeanor, shaped entirely by her military conditioning. She is antisocial and confrontational, possessing a strong superiority complex rooted in her identity as a genetically enhanced super soldier. She frequently dismisses those around her as inferior and views most social interactions through a tactical lens. Her early hostility is most intensely directed at Ichika Orimura, whom she blames for causing her revered mentor, Chifuyu Orimura, to forfeit a match during the Mondo Grosso tournament, an event Laura considers a stain on Chifuyu's otherwise perfect record. Her admiration for Chifuyu Orimura borders on worship, and she initially sees Ichika as a source of weakness in her idol.

Laura's motivations are driven by a desire to prove her worth as a soldier and to protect what she perceives as strength and honor. She has a rigid, black-and-white understanding of the world and struggles with social norms and interpersonal relationships due to her isolated upbringing. This lack of social awareness often leads to misunderstandings, such as when she declares Ichika to be her bride after misinterpreting Japanese cultural phrases. Despite her stern exterior, she gradually shows a softer side, particularly after Ichika defeats her in battle and offers a perspective on true strength that challenges her military worldview. She becomes openly affectionate and straightforward about her feelings, often acting without the hesitation or subtlety shown by the other heroines. This directness includes publicly kissing Ichika and openly competing for his attention, which can create friction with her peers.

As a genetically engineered super soldier, Laura possesses enhanced physical capabilities, reflexes, and endurance far beyond those of an ordinary person. She is highly proficient in combat tactics and military strategy. In the Infinite Stratos 2: World Purge OVA, Laura is among the five girls recruited by Chifuyu Orimura to enter the IS Academy's virtual network to fend off a cyberattack. Unbeknownst to her and the others, a malware program called World Purge is activated upon entry, trapping each girl in a fabricated reality that presents an ideal romantic version of their bond with Ichika. It falls to Ichika to rescue them and wake them from the virtual dream.

Laura's role in the series evolves from that of an initial antagonist to a key ally and one of the main heroines. Her development centers on learning to value human connection and camaraderie over pure combat strength. She forms complex relationships with the other IS Academy students, marked by a blend of rivalry and growing companionship. Her relationship with Chifuyu Orimura remains profoundly influential, as Chifuyu was the first person to show her guidance and belief. Her relationship with Ichika transforms from hatred and a desire to defeat him into deep respect and romantic feelings, a change that becomes a central part of her character arc.

In battle, Laura pilots the Schwarzer Regen, a formidable IS unit that emphasizes agility, precision, and advanced weaponry such as beam sabers and missile systems. She is capable of using the Valkyrie Trace System, a high-performance combat mode. Despite her enhanced abilities, her rigid military training sometimes limits her adaptability in casual situations and reveals a gap in emotional intelligence. Overall, Laura Bodewig is a character defined by the contrast between her origins as a designed weapon and her journey toward personal growth, friendship, and love.
