Description
Chloe Chronicle is a supporting character introduced in the "World Purge" arc of the anime Infinite Stratos 2. She is the elder sister of Laura Bodewig, though she refuses to acknowledge this familial bond. Like Laura, Chloe is a test-tube baby created in a laboratory. She was rescued and taken in by the brilliant but eccentric scientist Tabane Shinonono, to whom she has sworn absolute and unwavering loyalty. Tabane treats Chloe like her own daughter and affectionately calls her "Coo-chan". Chloe is 18 years old and shares several physical traits with her sister, including long silver hair and heterochromia; her left eye is black while her right eye is a striking gold color. Her resemblance to Laura is so strong that protagonist Ichika Orimura initially mistakes her for Laura upon their first meeting. Her typical attire is more elaborate than Laura's, resembling an elegant queen's outfit consisting of a white blouse, a blue ascot-like ribbon, a blue waist corset, and a matching knee-length skirt.
Chloe's personality is defined by her earnest and devoted service to Tabane, whom she regards as her savior and surrogate parent. Despite her somewhat cold or reserved exterior, she is deeply loyal and has a caring side, particularly toward those she is close to. A notable and recurring quirk is her complete inability to cook; her daily attempts to prepare meals for Tabane consistently result in inedible creations that resemble charcoal or strange gelatinous substances. Regardless of the outcome, Tabane eats everything Chloe makes without complaint, which reinforces their peculiar bond. Chloe carries a deep personal insecurity, viewing her younger sister Laura as the completed or perfect form that she herself could never become, which is the primary reason she denies their sisterly relationship.
In the story of the World Purge OVA, Chloe acts as an antagonist and agent for Tabane Shinonono. Her primary role is to carry out a cyber-attack on the Infinite Stratos Academy. She successfully infiltrates the academy's independent computer system and inserts a forced decryption program to reactivate Chifuyu Orimura's former IS unit, Kurezakura. From within the digital realm, she is the one who initiates the World Purge program. This program traps the female pilots in idealized virtual reality fantasies based on their deepest desires, but Chloe manipulates these illusions, turning them into nightmares. Her interference forces protagonist Ichika Orimura to enter the virtual world to rescue the other characters. After the program is dealt with, Chifuyu confronts Chloe in the real world. Overwhelmed by fear, Chloe attempts to attack Chifuyu but her abilities prove useless against the formidable instructor. Although Chifuyu spares her, Chloe is immediately ambushed and taken hostage by Squall Meusel of the terrorist organization Phantom Task.
Chloe's key relationships are central to her character. Her entire existence revolves around Tabane Shinonono, for whom she acts as a devoted right hand, personal maid, and ally. Her relationship with her sister Laura Bodewig is strained and ambiguous, as Chloe rejects Laura's status as a sibling out of a feeling of personal inadequacy rather than actual animosity. She is a contrast and foil to her younger sister, sharing a similar appearance and origin but possessing a very different emotional outlook. Her brief interaction with Ichika Orimura is notably polite, even though she is an obstacle to him. She displays no genuine hostility and explains her purpose before retreating from their first encounter.
Chloe is notable for her abilities, which focus on technological manipulation and cyber-warfare rather than direct combat. She pilots a dedicated IS unit known as both the Black Key and the Kurukagi, a machine specialized in cyber-warfare. In the digital or computer world, she can interfere with an opponent's mind, making them believe in an ideal reality to disrupt their cognitive processes. In the physical world, she can manipulate air currents to generate persuasive illusions, granting her significant power as a mind-controller despite her lack of conventional combat prowess. Ultimately, her development highlights her vulnerability; her hacking skills are formidable, but she is shown to be physically outmatched and paralyzed by fear when confronted directly by a strong combatant like Chifuyu Orimura.
