Description
Ichika Orimura is the main protagonist of the story, holding the unique distinction of being the only male in the world capable of piloting an Infinite Stratos, a powerful mechanized suit typically operated only by women. He is a first-year student and serves as the class representative of Class One, as well as the Vice-President of the Student Council at the IS Academy.

Physically, Ichika is a young man of average height with a slim, trained build. He has short black hair, parted in the middle, and dark brown eyes. He is most often seen in his standard IS Academy uniform or a dark blue tank top and tight-fitting shorts for practice sessions.

Ichika was raised by his older sister, Chifuyu Orimura, after their parents abandoned them at a young age. This upbringing instilled in him a polite and respectful demeanor towards women and those older than him. He is fundamentally kind and possesses a strong sense of chivalry and heroism, never hesitating to put himself in harm's way to protect his friends and companions. When angered, particularly by insults to his family or his country, he can become sharp-tongued and defiant, as seen in his first confrontation with Cecilia Alcott. He learns best through physical experience rather than theoretical study, often asking questions about basic concepts that others take for granted.

Perhaps his most defining personality trait is his extreme cluelessness or obliviousness regarding the romantic feelings of the many girls who surround him. He is often more concerned with his responsibilities as the only male pilot and his lack of knowledge about the IS than with the affections of his female classmates, believing he has no chance of getting a girlfriend. However, there are hints that this obliviousness may be partially intentional, and as the story progresses, particularly through events like the World Purge, he begins to show a growing awareness of the girls' feelings and his own actions towards them.

Ichika's primary motivation is to protect those close to him. He deeply regrets an incident from his childhood when he was kidnapped by the terrorist organization Phantom Task, forcing his sister Chifuyu to forfeit a tournament to rescue him. This drove him to become stronger so he would not be a burden again. He values his freedom to help others, which he regards as his greatest strength.

His central role in the story is as the unexpected pilot whose very existence disrupts the female-dominated world of the IS. His enrollment at the all-girls IS Academy serves as the foundation for much of the plot's conflict and comedy, as he navigates daily life, intense training, and battles against other students and external threats like Phantom Task. In the Infinite Stratos 2: World Purge narrative, he becomes more aware of the heroines' feelings and faces challenges that test his resolve, while also confronting the truth about his own origins and purpose.

Key relationships define much of his story. His bond with his sister Chifuyu is the most significant; she is his homeroom teacher and dorm supervisor. Despite her harsh and strict treatment of him, she deeply loves and cares for him as her only family, having sacrificed her own legendary piloting career to save him. He, in turn, is fiercely protective of her. He has multiple childhood friends, including Houki Shinonono, whom he trained in kendo with and made a childhood promise to, and Lingyin Huang. At the academy, he attracts the romantic interest of several representative cadets, including Cecilia Alcott, Charlotte Dunois, and Laura Bodewig. He is initially glad to meet Charlotte when she is disguised as a boy, as he was relieved to have another male student at the school. Along with these five main heroines, he also forms a close bond with the student council president, Tatenashi Sarashiki. Ichika also has a twin sister, Madoka Orimura, who was created as part of the same secret project as him. Unlike Chifuyu, Madoka despises him and works for Phantom Task, becoming a direct enemy.

Throughout the series, Ichika shows noticeable development. Initially, he is completely naive about piloting an IS and the social dynamics of the academy. Over time, he improves his piloting skills and begins to suspect the truth about his own nature. A significant turning point occurs during the World Purge incident, which forces him to become more self-aware and purposeful. Investigations reveal that his existence is not natural; he is a genetically engineered "test tube baby," the result of a secret project called the "Orimura Project" (or Project Mosaica), designed to create the ultimate human. This origin explains his unique abilities, such as an unnatural rapid healing factor that functions more like being "repaired" than healed, and a mysterious connection that allows him to sense when loved ones are in danger.

As a pilot, Ichika operates the personal IS unit known as Byakushiki, which is specially designed for him. His piloting skills are considered slightly above average but are often outmatched by more skilled pilots with more advanced equipment. He compensates for this with his ability to quickly spot attack patterns and enemy weaknesses, a talent honed from his childhood training in kendo. His Byakushiki is notable for its lack of ranged weaponry, focusing entirely on close combat. It has several advanced forms and techniques, including a powerful ability to cancel out enemy energy attacks and shields, as well as a unique "ultimate ability" that can forcibly reset a rampaging or malfunctioning IS. As the series progresses, he gains access to more powerful "Second Shift" and "Third Shift" forms of his IS, further enhancing his combat capabilities.
