Description
Gramia Nehrich Windermere, also known as Gramia VI and the King of the Wind, serves as the sovereign of the Windermere Kingdom in the anime Macross Delta. He is a male character with a notable ancestry, being the father of Keith Aero Windermere and Heinz Nehrich Windermere. His background is deeply intertwined with the political and martial history of his people, as he is a former member of the elite Aerial Knights, the kingdom’s ace pilot unit. Before ascending to the throne, he was a student of Ernest Johnson, a fact that establishes a personal connection to one of the key figures opposing him later in the conflict.

In terms of personality, Gramia is portrayed as a ruler driven by a deep-seated sense of chivalry and honor, though his character is also marked by a pragmatic desperation to achieve his goals. His former teacher criticized him for being too chivalrous, suggesting an initial adherence to a strict code of conduct in battle. However, as the war against the New United Nations Government progresses, Gramia demonstrates a willingness to abandon that chivalry for strategic advantage, using unconventional tactics and psychological warfare to outmaneuver his opponents. His actions are ultimately rooted in a profound grudge against the New United Nations Government for deploying a Dimension Eater weapon on his home planet, an event that destroyed a Windermerean village and deeply scarred the kingdom’s populace. This national trauma fuels his primary motivation: to free the Brisingr Globular Cluster from what he sees as oppressive external control and restore Windermere's independence and power.

Gramia’s role in the story is that of the primary antagonist and the driving force behind the Windermerean war effort. He leads his kingdom in an open declaration of war against the New United Nations Government, seeking to exploit ancient Protoculture ruins and the power of the Vár Syndrome to seize control of the entire star cluster. He commands the resurrected Protoculture warship, the Sigur Valens, from which his son Heinz uses his powers as a Wind Singer to spread chaos among enemy forces. A significant development in his character arc occurs when the Sigur Valens is severely damaged by the Macross Elysion during a battle on the planet Ragna. Mortally wounded on the ship’s bridge, Gramia is ultimately killed not by his enemies, but by his trusted aide, Roid Brehm. Roid finishes him off in a calculated move to manipulate the king’s final wishes, seizing control of the kingdom’s agenda for his own ambitious ends.

His key relationships are central to the plot. His bond with his two sons is complex; he is the father of the prodigal Aerial Knights leader Keith, who remains a loyal but distant son, and the young and physically frail Heinz, whose health deteriorates with each use of his song for the war. He also places great trust in Chancellor Roid Brehm, a decision that ultimately leads to his demise. This trust is also part of a larger alliance with the Epsilon Foundation, which provides technological support in exchange for access to Protoculture research. While Gramia appears determined to secure his people's future, his death marks a turning point in the series, exposing the fragility of his plans and paving the way for a more radical and destructive path under Roid’s leadership. In terms of notable abilities, Gramia is characterized primarily by his strategic leadership and military command, leveraging both his political authority and the unique biological traits of the Windermereans to wage war. Though his direct combat abilities are not extensively displayed, his past as an Aerial Knight and his tactical acumen in commanding the Sigur Valens and his fleets establish him as a formidable and calculating ruler.
