Description
Miya is a supporting character in the anime Onsen Yōsei Hakone-chan. She is a hot spring spirit who serves as the guardian of the Miyanoshita Hot Spring District. Like the protagonist Hakone, Miya is one of the older hot spring spirits who had been asleep for a long time and recently awakened, but unlike Hakone she retains a significant portion of her powers. In her default state she appears as a sixteen year old girl, but when at full potential she can manifest as a woman in her twenties. She dresses in a Gothic-style outfit and speaks in a refined, polite manner. Miya arrives in the Hakone Yumoto district with the goal of establishing a large hotel and taking away Hakone’s fame and influence. She considers Hakone to be her archrival and initially employs underhanded tactics, such as hypnotizing potential customers with her magical secret puzzle box, which is similar to the one owned by Hakone. She also possesses an ability called the Water of Servitude, which she attempts to use on Hakone. Despite her rivalry, Miya becomes increasingly involved in the daily life of the town and gradually develops romantic feelings for the human boy Touya, often following him around in an attempt to be near him. This affection becomes a source of comedic tension, particularly with Haruna, who also has feelings for Touya. Over the course of the story, Miya’s role shifts from antagonist to a more cooperative ally, and she joins Hakone and the others on various adventures. Her notable abilities include the use of her magical puzzle box to influence others and her retained spiritual power, which allows her to maintain a more mature appearance and a greater degree of control compared to Hakone. She is accompanied by a butler named Zenzo, who assists her in managing the hotel. Miya is considered one of the Hakone Seven Spirits, the group of tutelary hot spring spirits in the region.
