Description
Hikari Kohinata, often called by her nickname Pikari, is a fifteen-year-old first-year student at Yumegaoka High School. She lives in the coastal town of Izu, where she is a resident and an instructor at a diving shop run by her grandmother, Kino Kohinata. Her full name means light, a reflection of her vibrant and illuminating presence. Physically, she is a small and athletic girl, standing at 148 centimeters tall with chin-length green hair and bright yellow eyes.
At her core, Hikari is defined by an irrepressibly optimistic and hyperactive nature. A quintessential genki girl, she is almost never seen feeling down, and any negative mood tends to pass very quickly. Her enthusiasm is boundless, and she lives by the philosophy of finding fun and wonder in every situation, often expressed through her signature phrases like Lets a go! and upyo!. This unique worldview leads her to act on impulse, which can sometimes get her into minor trouble at school or lead her to jump from adventurous heights for the sake of excitement. She is, however, not simply a ball of chaos; beneath her absent-minded exterior lies a surprisingly insightful person who is highly attuned to the emotions of others, especially when they are feeling low.
Hikari is deeply passionate about scuba diving, finding a sense of profound peace and connection when she is in the ocean. She carries a divers whistle with her everywhere, a protective charm gifted to her by her grandmother, and often blows a marching beat on it when she is nervous or has difficulty expressing her feelings verbally. Her impulse is to spread joy to the people around her, and she is intensely loyal to her friends, going out of her way to cheer them up with creative and unpredictable gestures. She loves giving people cute nicknames, a habit that stems from her playful and affectionate personality.
The central relationship in Hikari's story is with her classmate, Futaba Ooki, who she nicknames Teko. Their friendship is the primary driver of the narrative, as Hikaris relentless energy pulls the shy and hesitant Futaba out of her shell and into the world of diving. Hikari acts as a supportive and encouraging guide, acting as Futabas diving buddy and constantly cheering her on with an enthusiastic Fight!. She is also close to her diving club advisor, Mato Katori, whom she befriends after discovering he is a fellow diver. Her family life is centered around her grandmother, Kino, who runs the local dive shop and for whom Hikari helps out. Other important relationships include her upperclassmen at the diving club, Ai and Makoto Ninomiya, as well as her family members, which include her sister Kodama, a brother, and her grandparents Hayate and Kino.
Throughout the story, Hikari serves as a catalyst for change, not only for Futaba but for everyone around her. She is responsible for introducing people to the wonders of the natural world, from the beautiful underwater seascapes to the simple joy of blooming hydrangeas or a street lined with cherry blossom trees. Her personal development is subtle but present; while she remains an agent of positivity, the story also shows that she can have moments of losing her way, and that she relies on her friends support just as they rely on hers. Her unwavering cheerfulness is not naivety but a conscious choice to embrace life with joy.
