Description
Kanata Totokubara is a character from the anime and light novel series Chivalry of a Failed Knight. She is a seventeen-year-old, third-year student at Hagun Academy, where she holds the position of student council treasurer. As a Blazer, she holds a B-Rank, which makes her the second strongest student knight at the academy, a status reflected in her German nickname, Scharlach Frau.
In terms of appearance, Kanata has a mature look for her age, characterized by long, golden blonde hair that reaches the middle of her back and covers part of her forehead. She has blue eyes and is usually depicted wearing a white sundress and a white sun hat. A distinctive part of her attire is her constant habit of carrying an umbrella or parasol, a practical necessity due to the effects of her combat abilities.
Kanata possesses a calm, mature, and ladylike personality. True to her composed demeanor, she can sometimes discuss very serious or dangerous subjects in an offhand, casual manner. Despite her poised exterior, she has admitted to having a more childish side, one that enjoys playing pranks on her close friends. Her defining trait is her profound loyalty; she is deeply committed to her friends and refuses to abandon them. This loyalty is demonstrated when she chooses to forfeit her place in a major tournament, the Seven Stars Sword Art Festival, simply to remain by the side of her injured friend Touka Toudou.
Her background is rooted in significant influence and personal connection. Kanata is the daughter of the head of the Totokubara Group, a powerful and elite conglomerate in Japan with origins in the French aristocracy. Despite her family's wealth and status, she was raised in the Wakaba House, an orphanage that her family patronizes, although she herself was not an orphan. It was at this orphanage that she first met her two most important childhood friends, Utakata Misogi and Touka Toudou. Her family is also deeply involved in philanthropic work; Kanata herself acts as a general affairs assistant for the Totokubara Family Welfare Fund, handling paperwork and administrative duties.
As a Blazer, Kanata is a highly skilled swordswoman. Her Device, a physical manifestation of her soul, is a refined rapier named Francesca, which is described as being made of transparently pale glass. Her signature Noble Art, a special ability unique to a Blazer, is called Diamond Dust. This technique causes her rapier to scatter thousands of tiny, glass-like fragments into the air around her opponent. The true danger of Diamond Dust lies in its subtlety; if inhaled or if they enter the eyes, these fragments can slice an enemy from the inside out. She also possesses a more powerful variation called Diamond Storm, which allows her to manipulate all of these scattered fragments at once to perform millions of simultaneous slashes on her target. Due to the heavy rebound of blood that results from using these techniques, Kanata is compelled to always carry an umbrella.
Within the story of Chivalry of a Failed Knight, Kanata serves as a supporting character. She is first seen interacting with the student council and discussing the protagonist, Ikki Kurogane's, victory. Her role becomes more active when she and the student council are tasked with a mission to defeat a giant, during which she works alongside Ikki and Stella Vermillion. She is also a participant in the selection battles for the Seven Stars Sword Art Festival. However, during an attack on the academy by the Akatsuki organization, she and her student council colleagues are easily defeated. Following this, and after her friend Touka is left unconscious from a brutal fight, Kanata decides to withdraw from the tournament to stay by Touka's side, solidifying her role as a loyal and supportive friend rather than a primary combatant in the main tournament arc.
Later developments in the light novel series explore her responsibilities beyond the academy, particularly her work with the Totokubara Family Welfare Fund. While involved with the Wakaba House orphanage, she becomes embroiled in a serious situation involving a seemingly helpful old man who is later revealed by the League of Blazers to be a highly dangerous escaped criminal named Tendou Harima. This incident highlights her role as a responsible young woman dealing with serious real-world threats and administrative challenges outside of a school setting.
