Description
Ayase Ayatsuji is a seventeen-year-old third-year student at Hagun Academy and a D-rank Blazer. She is the only daughter of Kaito Ayatsuji, a renowned swordsman known as the Last Samurai, and the heir to the Ayatsuji Itto-ryu, the one-sword style her father developed. Her background is marked by tragedy: two years before the story begins, a powerful knight named Kuraudo Kurashiki challenged her father's dojo. In the ensuing duel, Kuraudo severely injured Kaito, leaving him in a coma, and subsequently took possession of the family dojo. Ayase witnessed this defeat, which instilled in her a deep-seated hatred for Kuraudo and a desperate need for revenge.

Initially, Ayase’s personality is defined by a stark contrast between her daily demeanor and her identity as a swordswoman. In everyday life, she is extremely shy and anxious, particularly around boys her own age, to the point of being unable to make eye contact. This social awkwardness was so pronounced that she once followed the protagonist, Ikki Kurogane, for a week simply because she was too nervous to speak to him. Despite this timidity, she is still a teenage girl with a normal interest in romance, and she can become quite inquisitive and teasing when discussing the love lives of others, particularly with Stella Vermillion.

However, when she holds a sword, her anxiety vanishes, revealing a focused and highly capable martial artist. This serious side is also fueled by her mission for retribution. Her motivation is singular and powerful: to defeat Kuraudo Kurashiki, reclaim her father's dojo, and restore the peaceful days she lost. This desire for revenge, however, leads her to develop a darker, more desperate nature, adopting a pragmatic mindset where she believes anything is acceptable as long as she wins.

Her role in the story is primarily that of a rival and later a student to Ikki Kurogane. Feeling she has hit a slump in her swordsmanship, she seeks out Ikki, who is famous for his skill despite his low rank, and asks to become his disciple. Their relationship is central to her character development. While she greatly admires Ikki as a fellow swordsman, she is not romantically interested in him. He becomes a mentor and a friend who helps her see the flaws in her approach. This is most evident during their official match in the Seven Stars Sword Art Festival selection rounds. Desperate to win and earn the right to face Kuraudo, Ayase resorts to trickery, setting traps in the arena and manipulating Ikki into exhausting his trump card, Ittou Shura, before the fight even began. During the match, Ikki recognizes that she is lost and fighting for the wrong reasons. He defeats her fairly and, in an act of profound empathy, promises to defeat Kuraudo in her place.

This defeat serves as the catalyst for her development. She is forced to confront the emptiness of her revenge-driven path. During Ikki's subsequent battle with Kuraudo, Ayase has an epiphany, remembering that her father's final words were not an apology for losing, but an apology to Kuraudo for not being able to fight him at full strength. This realization helps her let go of her destructive obsession and rededicate herself to the true way of the samurai, honoring her father's legacy by pursuing authentic strength rather than blind vengeance.

As a knight, Ayase wields a katana-shaped Device, which is named Hizume or Scarlet Claw. Her Noble Art falls under the category of Conceptual Manipulation, specifically the concept of Wounds. This ability allows her to make any wound inflicted by her sword drastically more severe, potentially turning a small scratch into a fatal injury. She also possesses a special technique called Mark of the Wind, where she creates an invisible cut in the air that she can later open, unleashing a sudden blast of cutting wind. In terms of pure swordsmanship, she is a highly disciplined practitioner of the Ayatsuji Itto-ryu, a style focused on defense and quick counterattacks. Initially, her technique was criticized for being an imperfect imitation of her father's more masculine movements, but through training with Ikki, she learns to adapt the style to her own female physique, improving her effectiveness. Despite her skill, her official Blazer stats list her as D-rank, with a C+ in offensive power but E-rank in defense, magic, and luck, reflecting her status as a highly capable but not overwhelmingly powerful knight.
