Description
Heinz Axmann is a character from the anime Schwarzes Marken. He holds the rank of Oberstleutnant (Lieutenant Colonel) and serves as a high-ranking officer in the Stasi, the state security service of East Germany, where he also acts as a参谋 on the armed police force. Known by the ominous nicknames the "Brown Beast" and "Spy Hunter," he is recognized as a primary antagonist within the story.

Axmann's personality is defined by a profound and calculated cruelty. He is portrayed as a sociopath who derives a sense of power from the misery and pain of others, sometimes inflicting suffering even when it offers no strategic advantage. An opportunistic and ambitious man, his sole loyalty is to his own preservation and advancement. He shifts allegiances as needed, such as joining the faction of Beatrix Brehme when it becomes politically advantageous, and is willing to manipulate both the government and rebel factions for personal gain. He views the people around him not as individuals but as disposable tools to be used and discarded.

Axmann's primary motivation is the consolidation of his own power. He becomes a central figure in the story by orchestrating elaborate schemes to control key individuals and gain leverage over various parties. He is deeply involved in political in-fighting, notably the power struggle between the Berlin Stasi faction and the Moscow faction led by Beatrix Brehme. A significant part of his strategy involves acquiring and holding the Stasi's secret files, which he uses as a bargaining chip to negotiate with anti-establishment forces.

His role in the narrative is that of the ultimate instigator of tragedy, a shadowy figure whose actions directly shape the suffering of several main characters. He is personally responsible for the systematic destruction of the Eberbach family. Years before the main events, he captured the family as they attempted to flee to West Germany. After killing the parents, he focused on breaking the children, Theodor and Lise. He subjected Lise to gang rape, using photographs of the act and threats against her brother to force her into becoming a spy and informant for the Stasi, a role that involved sexual servitude and eventually murder. He similarly holds power over Irisdina, having forced her five years prior to the story's start to execute her own brother as a test of loyalty, thereby becoming her "master".

Throughout the story, Axmann does not undergo any personal development or redemption; he remains a consistently ruthless and manipulative figure. However, his grip on power begins to slip as the war situation deteriorates and his schemes turn others against him. In the final confrontation, when his attempts to negotiate a way to maintain his position are rejected, he is shot and killed. In his final moments, he attempts to shoot a character named Katia, but Irisdina sacrifices herself to take the bullet, making his death a final act of destruction. This end represents the fall of a quintessential cold-blooded political operative who contributed greatly to the dehumanizing machinery of war.

In terms of notable abilities, Axmann is not a frontline combatant but his power lies in psychological manipulation and institutional control. His chief skill is his talent for identifying a person's deepest fear or weakness and exploiting it to bend them completely to his will. As a senior Stasi officer, he also wields the full repressive authority of the secret police, allowing him to orchestrate purges, order executions, and deploy military units like the Stasi TSF Guard Force to maintain his control. In the anime, he is depicted with red hair, differing from his earlier novel description as a gray-haired man, and is noted for his immaculate military uniform which he keeps fastidiously clean.
