Description
Lise Hohenstein is a central character in the anime Schwarzes Marken. She is introduced as a tactical surface fighter pilot assigned to the 666th TSF Squadron, known as Schwarzes Marken, as a replacement for an injured pilot. She is the step-sister of the protagonist, Theodor Eberbach, who had long believed she was killed by the Stasi, the East German secret police, three years prior following her family’s failed attempt to defect to West Germany. Her sudden reappearance places her under immediate suspicion among her new squad mates, who fear she may be a Stasi spy.

Born on June 28 and raised in Prenzlauer Berg, Berlin, Lise originally aspired to work in theater, wanting to bring dreams and joy to a world she saw as dark. However, her life took a tragic turn after her capture by the Stasi. Instead of being executed, she was subjected to brainwashing and coercive conditioning, eventually being conscripted into the elite Werewolf Battalion under the command of Beatrix Brehme. During her captivity, she endured severe abuse at the hands of Stasi officer Heinze Axmann, who used her as a personal sex slave before forcing her to undergo training as a Swallow, a female spy trained to use her body to extract intelligence. These traumatic experiences fundamentally reshaped her personality, compelling her to spy on, track, and eliminate innocent citizens in order to survive, with her only remaining anchor being the desire to reunite with her brother.

Lise’s personality is defined by a deep internal conflict between the remnants of her former self and the conditioning imposed by the Stasi. She outwardly operates as a loyal Stasi agent, revealing her true allegiance during an ambush against the 666th Squadron, where she takes most of her former comrades prisoner for their anti-Stasi activities. Despite her coerced loyalty to the regime, she harbors a desperate, conflicted love for her brother, Theodor, and a lingering wish to protect him. Her motivations are primarily driven by survival and a twisted sense of duty instilled by her captors, but beneath that lies a broken person struggling with guilt and the memory of her lost dreams.

In the story, Lise serves as both a tragic antagonist and a catalyst for plot development. Her role is deeply interwoven with the political intrigue and moral compromises of the East German military, as she fights both the alien BETA threat and the internal enemies of the Stasi. Her key relationship is with Theodor, her step-brother, who initially sees her as a miraculous survivor but must eventually confront the reality of what she has become. Her relationship with Beatrix Brehme is that of a subordinate to a ruthless commander, while her history with Axmann is one of victim and abuser.

Lise’s development traces a path from a hopeful child, to a traumatized captive, to a brainwashed operative, and finally to a redeemed or tragic figure. At the end of the story, she and her squad fall victim to a joint ambush by the 666th Squadron, the resistance organization Grosser Bar, and the Nationale Volksarmee. She is ultimately killed by Theodor himself, a culmination of her tragic arc. As a TSF pilot, Lise is a capable fighter, trained in the use of tactical surface fighters, and as a Stasi operative, she is skilled in espionage, infiltration, and psychological manipulation. Her abilities as a pilot and a spy make her a formidable opponent, but her greatest strength—her will to survive—is also the source of her deepest tragedy.
