Description
Major Beatrix Brehmer is a central antagonist in the anime Schwarzes Marken, serving as the commander of the Werewolf battalion, a Tactical Surface Fighter unit belonging to the East German Stasi. Known for her ruthless efficiency, she leads her forces in hunting deserters, suppressing anti-government dissent, and eliminating those attempting to flee to the West.

Beatrix is a figure of notable beauty and charisma, often described with a bewitching or glamorous appearance, characterized by long black hair and red eyes. Her personality is complex and multifaceted. On the surface, she is a sadistic and cruel individual who appears to take pleasure in the suffering of her enemies, as shown during interrogations and executions. She is ambitious, manipulative, and cold-hearted, enjoying the role of a provocateur who makes others squirm with her taunts and threats. Despite this, she is also a highly effective and charismatic leader who commands absolute loyalty from her subordinates, preferring to lead from the front and never asking her soldiers to do anything she would not do herself. Beneath this harsh exterior lies a deep-seated guilt and disgust for the atrocities she commits. She acknowledges that her hands are stained with blood and that there is no glory awaiting her, rationalizing her actions as a necessary evil to achieve a greater goal.

Her primary motivation is a twisted interpretation of the ideals held by Jurgen Bernhard, the deceased brother of her rival, Irisdina. Believing that politicians are too corrupt and indecisive to fight the BETA effectively, Beatrix aims to reform East Germany into a militaristic, secret-police dictatorship. She views this as the most efficient way to act as a bulwark against the alien threat, even if it means sacrificing East Germany for the rest of the world. She opposes democratization and German reunification, believing such changes would be disruptive to the front lines.

Within the story, Beatrix acts as a primary antagonist to the 666th TSF Battalion. Her role is to crush a rising rebellion and consolidate the Stasi's power, often putting her into direct conflict with the protagonists. Her relationship with Irisdina Bernhard is central to her character. The two were childhood friends and classmates at a military academy, but their bond soured when Beatrix fell in love with Irisdina's brother, Jurgen. After Jurgen's death, Beatrix came to loathe Irisdina, blaming her for the loss and her subsequent abandonment. Despite this animosity, a part of her secretly wishes to reconcile with her former friend. While she has a good working relationship with Stasi officials like Heinze Axmann and Erich Schmidt, acting as their loyal attack dog in the anime, she is also pragmatic and will act on her own agenda. She respects loyalty above all else, which sometimes leads her to make decisions that defy pure pragmatism, such as temporarily allying with her enemies against the BETA.

Throughout the series, Beatrix is shown to be a superb pilot, considered one of the strongest in Europe. She is entrusted with field-testing the next-generation Soviet TSF, the MiG-27, which she pilots with a distinctive crimson color scheme. Her tactical brilliance allows her to outmaneuver experienced generals and command the battlefield effectively. However, she is not a static character. The anime portrays her as more of a snarling, bloodthirsty berserker compared to her calmer depiction in the visual novels, devolving into a vengeful state when mortally wounded. Her development is tied to her tragic past, including a history of severe depression and a cruel father, which shaped her into the hardened soldier she becomes. Her ultimate defeat comes at the hands of Theodor Eberbach, who bisects her cockpit with a combat knife after a fierce final duel, a death that she experiences in tremendous pain and which demoralizes the loyalist forces.
