Description
Liz Hohenstein is a central character in the anime Schwarzes Marken, originally introduced as the step-sister of protagonist Theodor Eberbach. She grew up in Prenzlauer Berg, Berlin, as the daughter of playwrights Thomas and Marlene Hohenstein, who had taken Theodor from an orphanage. Influenced by her parents, she developed an interest in theater and aspired to bring joy and dreams to a dark world. She was also gifted with languages and participated in a drama club during her school years. Three years before the main events, Liz and her family attempted to defect to West Germany but were captured by the Stasi, the East German secret police. Theodor believed she had been killed. However, she survived and was brainwashed into becoming a Stasi agent, later conscripted into the elite Werewolf Battalion under the command of Beatrix Brehme. She reappears as a reinforcement pilot assigned to the 666th TSF Squadron, the same unit her step-brother serves in. Her sudden return immediately raises suspicion among the squadron members. During an ambush, she reveals herself as a Stasi agent and captures most of her former comrades for their anti-Stasi activities. Her personality is outwardly friendly and warm, a remnant of her original self, but her brainwashing has made her a dedicated operative. Her motivations are conflicted: while she genuinely cared for Theodor, her conditioning forces her to serve the Stasi. In the story, she serves as both a tragic antagonist and a catalyst for the squadron’s internal conflicts. Her key relationship is with Theodor, whom she always held feelings for beyond those of a sibling. She also works closely with Beatrix Brehme. Her development follows a trajectory from a presumed dead loved one to a seemingly hostile agent, ultimately ending in a joint ambush by the 666th Squadron, the resistance group Grosser Bar, and the Nationale Volksarmee, where she is killed by Theodor’s own hands. Her notable abilities include being a skilled TSF (Tactical Surface Fighter) pilot, multilingual proficiency, and training as an intelligence agent.
