Description
Ikuya Ogura is a biophysicist who left Japan for the United States in 1999 and became one of the leading figures in American research on the Ajin. He holds a doctorate, and although his papers are dismissed as outlandish by Japanese researchers, his work is surprisingly well received in the United States. As a result of his position, he knows secrets about the Ajin that the Japanese government does not possess and that only the American government is aware of.
Ogura first arrives in Japan to examine Kei Nagai after Nagai has been captured. During this visit he is accompanied by David Anderson, who officially serves as his bodyguard. When Satou attacks the research facility, Ogura is seized by Yuu Tosaki and interrogated so that he will reveal the information he holds. He is officially reported dead, but in truth he survives and is kept in a private compound, where he cooperates with Tosaki's group alongside Nagai.
In personality, Ogura is bold and audacious, with a detached and practical outlook. He stands largely on the neutral side of the conflict between the government and the Ajin: he does not care much about what happens to either side, but he regards the Ajin as extremely interesting research subjects. This intellectual curiosity is his main motivation, and it makes him willing to cooperate with whoever can offer him access to compelling scientific material. He is also a heavy smoker who is particular about the discontinued cigarette brand Mild Seven FK, and he is willing to put himself at risk for the sake of his habit.
His key relationships include his working arrangement with Kei Nagai, with whom he is detained and cooperates inside the compound; his dealings with Yuu Tosaki, the official who captures him and extracts information; and his connection to Satou, whose assault on the research facility drastically changes Ogura's circumstances. He also maintains a professional association with David Anderson, who escorts him during his time in Japan.
In terms of development, Ogura moves from being an outside specialist dispatched to inspect a captured subject, to a detained source of classified knowledge, and finally to a cooperating researcher within Tosaki's operation. His most notable ability is not physical but intellectual: his deep expertise in Ajin biology and his access to confidential American research make him one of the most valuable sources of information in the struggle surrounding the Ajin.
