Description
Pavlov is a supporting character in the anime Divine Gate, known as one of the Geniuses of the Divine Age. He is a scientist affiliated with the World Council and comes from the Common World. He works in the council's laboratory, where he researches and invents independent-type drivers, and he personally uses a prosthetic-arm type driver of his own design called Eruption, which later appears in an evolved form known as Eruption: Homura. He is an adult man with red hair and red eyes. His birthday is June 9, making him a Gemini, and his blood type is O. In his private life, he can play the guitar, and his favorite food is miso dengaku, while he dislikes dragon rolls.

In terms of personality, Pavlov is extremely reclusive. He rarely interacts with other people and generally keeps to himself in his laboratory, devoting himself almost entirely to his research and inventions. He is highly intelligent, calculating, and driven, and he is described as a fire genius whose actions were all part of a plan, even to the point of using his own son. Beneath this cold and detached exterior, however, he shows a quieter, more caring side through his actions, such as watching over his son's growth from the shadows.

Pavlov's background is closely tied to his son, Akane, one of the central characters. Akane had been told that his father died in an incident in his laboratory, but Pavlov actually survived the explosion, which occurred during the fifty-ninth activation experiment of the driver Eruption. He allowed the world to believe he was deceased and continued his work in secret as a member of the World Council, carrying the name of the genius Pavlov. Among his projects, he developed a fifth-generation autonomous weapon-type driver, which he hoped would become his son's strength.

His main motivation is his research and his determination to follow his own path as a genius. This single-minded pursuit led him to challenge even his son. When father and son finally met again, Pavlov confronted Akane and told him that if he was a man, he should come back and return the favor, a challenge meant to push his son to grow stronger. He left behind a single crimson earring, which Akane wore in his right ear, believing it would give his son the strength to stand up again.

The most important relationship in Pavlov's life is with Akane. Despite their long separation, the bond between them is marked by mutual pride and respect. Akane remembered his father as the coolest person in the world, and Pavlov, in turn, recognized and affirmed his son's strength and pride. In a remembrance episode, Pavlov tells his young child that he lived his own life, and the child, understanding that these were farewell words, refuses to hear them, declaring that his father is the coolest person in the world. Pavlov then acknowledges his son as his pride and sends him on his way. Their relationship is also shaped by Pavlov's choice to walk his own path, leaving his son behind, and by the understanding that only the son could truly affirm the life his father lived.

Within the larger story, Pavlov serves as a supporting figure whose hidden survival and secret work have a significant impact on Akane's journey. His reappearance forces Akane to confront the truth about his father and strengthens his resolve to grow and surpass him. As a member of the World Council and one of the Geniuses of the Divine Age, he works alongside other scientists and council members, though he remains largely isolated from them by choice.

Pavlov's development is centered on the revelation of his survival and his complicated role as a father. He moves from being a supposedly deceased figure in Akane's past to a living scientist pursuing his own ambitions, and finally to a father who tests his son and then disappears again. In later material, his legacy is honored with a memorial science museum built in the Common World, where he is remembered as a genius of his era. His story with Akane concludes on a note of affirmation, reflecting the idea that the fire parent and child never deny the past, affirm the present, and believe in the future.

In terms of abilities, Pavlov is a brilliant engineer and inventor, best known for his prosthetic-arm type driver Eruption. This device grants him powerful fire-based combat capabilities, and its evolved form Eruption: Homura represents an even greater degree of power. His skill as a scientist makes him a valuable asset to the World Council, and his inventions, particularly the drivers he creates, are central to both his character and his influence on the story.
