Description
Koutarou Takebayashi is a student in Class 3-E of Kunugigaoka Junior High School, the class tasked with assassinating their teacher, Korosensei. He has black hair combed over the sides of his head and wears round eyeglasses, giving him a bookish and unobtrusive appearance. Underneath the unassuming look, however, he is actually considered quite handsome, a fact that becomes apparent when his glasses are removed or his hair is styled differently. He comes from a family of doctors, with older brothers already in medical school, and this lineage places heavy expectations on his academic performance. The pressure to achieve excellence initially led him to adopt rigid, inefficient study habits that caused him to slip into the lower-ranked E Class despite his natural intelligence.
Takebayashi’s personality is defined by his calm, analytical nature and his tendency to approach situations with logic and planning. He is an introverted and somewhat reserved individual, often uncomfortable with direct eye contact, which makes him prefer interactions where he does not have to meet someone’s gaze. He possesses a deep well of knowledge, particularly in the sciences, and is a classic crammer who can absorb and recall facts even when he lacks personal interest in them. Outside of academics, he is an enthusiastic otaku with a strong preference for two-dimensional characters, frequently visiting maid cafes and collecting anime figures. This hobby occasionally creates friction with classmates like Fuwa Yuzuki, another fan of fictional works, because their respective anime and manga loyalties clash, but it also gives him common ground with students such as Terasaka Ryoma, with whom he regularly visits maid cafes. He can discuss girls with Okajima Taiga up to a point, but he tends to withdraw when conversations become too explicit. While he is not physically strong and struggles in physical education, he is far from lazy and contributes meaningfully with his intellect.
His primary motivation is rooted in a desire to be recognized by his family. The weight of his medical lineage made him feel that his worth was tied to academic success, and he once briefly transferred to the elite A Class after improving his grades under Korosensei’s tutelage. Ultimately, however, he chose to return to E Class because he came to see it as the place where he truly belonged, describing it as the most comforting environment for him after a maid cafe. This experience solidified his loyalty to the class and his willingness to work toward their shared goal, even though assassination was never his natural strength.
Within the class, Takebayashi plays the role of a planner and information specialist. His codename during assassination attempts is “Glasses (Explosive),” reflecting his affinity for bombs and gunpowder. He gathers and analyzes data, calculates trajectories and weak points, and is responsible for preparing explosives. His intelligence-gathering and scouting abilities are highly rated, as is his proficiency with traps and technical preparations. On the other hand, his direct combat execution is minimal, and he is not suited for front-line action. His calm, decision-making demeanor makes him an essential behind-the-scenes strategist who helps coordinate operations.
Takebayashi’s relationships within the class are varied. He sees Isogai Yuuma as both a rival and a figure of genuine respect, admiring his honest character. With Chiba Ryunosuke, whose eyes are always hidden by his bangs, he finds a rare conversational comfort because he does not have to navigate eye contact. He holds a quiet admiration for Asano Gakushuu, the top student of the main campus, recognizing the pressure Asano faces from his own father and hoping that one day he might be able to help him break free. His interactions with the AI student Ritsu lean toward the eccentric, as he once had her dress as a maid, fully indulging his two-dimensional interests. Okuda Manami, a fellow science-minded student, is one of the few girls who does not distance herself after learning of his hobbies; she admires the courage he displayed during a crisis on the class trip to Okinawa. In the future, the two work together in medical research.
Over the course of the story, Takebayashi undergoes notable development. He moves from a pressured, insecure student who simply memorized information to someone who discovers genuine interest in applied knowledge, particularly explosives, which influences his career considerations. He grows braver and more active in assassination efforts, no longer hanging back passively. Though his family expected him to become a doctor, he briefly explored other paths before ultimately embracing medicine on his own terms. Years after graduation, he is working at a national medical research center alongside Okuda, developing artificial blood based on the properties of Korosensei’s mucus, a project that combines his scientific acumen with the legacy of his unique classroom experience.
