Description
Jeje, also known as Doubt Doubt, is a character from the manga series Servamp, where he holds the position of the vampire Servamp representing the sin of Envy. He is recognized as the third oldest among the seven Servamp siblings. His physical appearance is highly distinctive, as his face is always concealed by three paper bags worn over his head; this has been a consistent trait for much of the series, though he eventually does reveal his face in the source material. Standing at a considerable height of 250 centimeters, which includes the bags, he typically dresses in dark, somber clothing that complements his mysterious and somewhat grim aura. When exposed to sunlight, Jeje is forced to assume his animal form, which is that of a black snake, a common trait among his kind.
In terms of personality, Jeje is defined by his extreme quietude and reluctance to engage in conversation. He speaks very rarely, and when he does, his words are often delivered as low mumbles or mutters, making him seem detached from his surroundings. He has a strong preference for solitude and has been observed sitting alone in corners, such as under a table during important meetings, showing his discomfort with social interaction. Despite this withdrawn nature, he is not without emotion; he can display a short temper, particularly when his personal belongings are threatened. For instance, he greatly dislikes it when his paper head coverings are dirtied. His hobbies, such as constructing intricate瓶中船 models, reflect his patient and detail-oriented personality. He has particular tastes in food and drink, enjoying pumpkin soup and hard water.
The character's backstory is deeply tragic and forms the core of his motivations and role in the narrative. For a long period, Jeje lived alone, having no contract with a human master. He was eventually invited to reside at the estate of the wealthy Alicein family, where he stayed quietly in the mansion's cellar. There, he was discovered by the wife of the Alicein household head, who formed a contract with him. However, her jealousy was amplified by Jeje's influence as the Servamp of Envy, corrupting her spirit to the point where she attempted to kill her own younger son. Her elder son, Mikuni Alicein, was forced to intervene. Mikuni formed his own new contract with Jeje, giving him the name Jeje, and used the vampire's power to stop and kill his mother. Following this traumatic event, Jeje and the now-displaced Mikuni left the Alicein estate together, marked by the tragedy they had shared.
This history defines his most significant relationship, which is with his Eve or human master, Mikuni Alicein. While Jeje is bound to follow Mikuni's orders, their dynamic is complex and often appears fraught with tension. Mikuni frequently teases or taunts Jeje with the promise of allowing him to drink his blood, a necessity for a Servamp, only to retract the offer. This creates a recurring cycle where Jeje, despite knowing Mikuni's pattern, falls for the promise and becomes frustrated when it is broken. Despite this seemingly combative relationship, they are deeply connected by their shared past and continue to operate as a pair, having joined and later left the organization known as C3 together, during which time Jeje was partnered with a human named Tsurugi Kamiya.
Jeje's development is closely tied to his evolving bond with Mikuni. Leaving aside his initial solitary existence and the disastrous contract with Mikuni's mother, his journey alongside Mikuni represents a slow, albeit unconventional, progression from a being of pure latent envy to one who operates within the framework of a partnership, however dysfunctional it may appear. His arc involves learning to coexist with his human master, moving from a passive figure hidden in a basement to an active participant in the conflicts that arise in the story.
Regarding his abilities, as a vampire Servap, Jeje possesses the standard supernatural traits of his kind, including transformation into his animal form, the snake. His primary and most notable weapon of choice is the gun, and he is known to carry and employ a variety of firearms. He has demonstrated significant offensive power; notably, he once used his pistol to shoot and incapacitate Kuro, the Servamp of Sloth, during a moment when Kuro had lost control and gone on a rampage. His power is also subject to the rules of the Servamp contract, meaning its strength is influenced by the will of his Eve, Mikuni. A unique and dangerous aspect of his nature involves the "contract backlash": should his master's life be threatened, Jeje is forced into a berserk state, rampaging until his energy is completely exhausted.
