Description
In the Pokémon XY & Z anime, Beni, known in some language versions as Tierno, is a young Pokémon Trainer from the Kalos region who serves as a friendly rival to Ash Ketchum. He originates from Santalune City and begins his journey with a Squirtle, which he receives from Professor Sycamore. Beni is a close childhood friend of two other Trainers, Shauna and Trevor, and the trio often spend time together discussing their adventures and supporting each other's goals.

Beni has a robust and stocky build, with dark, pointed hair and a distinctive fashion sense that includes a black shirt featuring a blue Vanillite design, orange pants, and black, yellow, and white shoes. He carries a yellow bag and wears a Holo Caster on his left wrist, which allows him to communicate with others. His most defining characteristic is his immense passion for dancing. This is not merely a hobby but the core of his identity as a Trainer. His dream is to form a grand dance team with his Pokémon, and he constantly seeks to create new, rhythmic battle styles by incorporating his Pokémon's movements into his choreography.

This love of dance directly shapes his personality and battle tactics. Beni is energetic, enthusiastic, and good-natured, often coming across as fun-loving and slightly clumsy in his demeanor. He is not a particularly intense or brooding rival; instead, he approaches battles with a performer's spirit, aiming to create a beautiful and rhythmic flow rather than simply overpowering his opponent. He also has a tendency to be easily smitten by girls he meets, a trait that adds a lighthearted and comedic element to his character.

In the story, Beni first appears during the Pokémon Summer Camp organized by Professor Sycamore, where he immediately recognizes Serena from her Pokémon Vision video and challenges Ash to a battle. He becomes a recurring rival, crossing paths with Ash multiple times as both Trainers collect Gym Badges and prepare for the Kalos League. His role is that of a supportive contemporary, always friendly and eager for a match, but determined to prove that his unique dancing style can lead to victory.

His key relationships are with his childhood friends Shauna and Trevor, with whom he shares a strong bond. They frequently reunite, travel together, and cheer for each other's successes. His rivalry with Ash is built on mutual respect, and he also shares a competitive dynamic with another skilled Trainer named Sawyer. Beni shows great admiration for the strength of others, such as when he is impressed by the power of Ash's Greninja and Trevor's Mega Charizard.

Beni undergoes notable development in his journey as a Trainer, which is most clearly reflected in the evolution of his team. His starter, Squirtle, evolves into Wartortle and eventually into its final form, Blastoise. He also catches other Pokémon that complement his dancing style, including a Raichu and a Ludicolo. His progress culminates in his participation in the Kalos League, where he successfully battles his way to the quarter-finals. In this intense full battle, he uses his Blastoise, Ludicolo, and Raichu against Sawyer. Despite his creative strategies, such as using Rain Dance to empower Ludicolo and guarantee Raichu's Thunder attacks, he is ultimately defeated by Sawyer's Mega Sceptile, ending his league run among the top eight Trainers in Kalos.

Beni's notable abilities are entirely centered on his integration of dance and battle. He does not rely on brute force but on rhythm, timing, and coordination. His Squirtle, Wartortle, and later Blastoise are trained to be incredibly agile, using dance-like movements to dodge attacks and position themselves for offense. His Ludicolo, a Pokémon that naturally embodies a joyful, dancing spirit, is a perfect partner, using moves like Rain Dance to control the battlefield's tempo. His Raichu complements this strategy with powerful, hard-to-miss electric moves. Beni's entire approach is to turn a battle into a performance, where maintaining the rhythm is as important as landing a hit, making him a distinctive and memorable competitor in the Kalos region.
