Description
Professeur Platane, called Professor Augustine Sycamore in English-language versions, is a recurring character in the animated series Pokémon XY & Z. He is a Pokémon Professor who lives and works in Lumiose City, in the Kalos region, where he directs the Platane Pokémon Laboratory. His main field of study is the evolution of Pokémon, and he is especially devoted to the mystery of Mega Evolution, the temporary transformation that certain Pokémon undergo when deeply bonded to a trainer who holds a Key Stone.

In his youth, Platane trained as a Pokémon battler and spent time at the Master Tower in Kalos, but he concluded that his true strength lay elsewhere and turned to research. He studied under Professor Rowan in the Sinnoh region and eventually became a professor himself, later returning to Kalos to establish his laboratory in Lumiose City. There he works with a team of assistants and keeps his own partner Pokémon, a Garchomp. The Garchomp originally came to him as a Gible, first encountered as an injured Pokémon that had caused trouble in the city. It was initially distrustful and prone to biting, but through Platane's patient kindness it became his devoted companion and, in time, his Mega Evolution partner.

Platane is cheerful, warm, and genuinely enthusiastic about Pokémon. He is known for his lively exclamation "Marvelous!", which he uses often, and he loves discussing his research and the bonds between people and Pokémon. He is helpful almost to a fault, quick to assist anyone in need and remaining calm and determined even in difficult situations. At the same time, he can be naive and easily distracted, and his attempts at charm frequently misfire; he is earnest and brilliant in his work but noticeably clumsy in his personal life. He takes care with his appearance, with wavy dark hair, light stubble, and a white lab coat worn over a blue shirt, and he enjoys spending his free time visiting cafés and sampling sweets.

Platane's central motivation is to understand the nature of Mega Evolution and of change in Pokémon more generally. He believes that the bond between a trainer and a Pokémon is the key to this phenomenon, and he works constantly to observe, document, and encourage such bonds. This belief also shapes his approach to young trainers: he entrusts starter Pokémon to beginners in Kalos and supports them on their journeys. In the series, he gives a Froakie to Ash, a Fennekin to Serena, and a Chespin to Clemont, and he also provides Ash with a Kalos Pokédex.

His role in the story is that of a recurring mentor and support figure. He first appears when Ash, Clemont, and Bonnie bring him an injured Froakie, which he recognizes and has treated, later allowing Ash to keep it. When Team Rocket attempts to capture his Garchomp and drives it berserk with a magnetic device, Platane joins the effort to calm the creature, and it is after this ordeal that he formally gives Ash his Pokédex. Throughout the series he remains available to the group, offering advice, equipment, and scientific insight. He is especially important to the trainer Alain, whom he has mentored and asked to travel the regions investigating Mega Evolution on his behalf. Later, during the events involving the mysterious Pokémon Zygarde and the threat posed by Team Flare, Platane is drawn directly into the conflict, and his Garchomp proves itself a powerful ally after mastering Mega Evolution.

Platane's key relationships include his assistant researchers, Alain as his student and field investigator, the group of Ash, Serena, Clemont, and Bonnie, and his Garchomp. He also shares a long friendship with Lysandre, a man he once admired and trusted. When Lysandre's true intentions come to light, Platane is deeply shaken and must come to terms with having believed in someone who became a danger to the region. This experience gives his character a more serious dimension in the final part of the series, as he works to help protect the Pokémon he studies and to respond to the upheaval around him.

In terms of development, Platane grows from an enthusiastic but somewhat sheltered researcher into a more seasoned figure who has confronted the darker side of the world he studies. The bond with his Garchomp is the clearest sign of his growth: what begins as a cautious and even difficult relationship becomes one of mutual trust, culminating in the Garchomp's ability to Mega Evolve. His research also expands beyond Mega Evolution to include Zygarde, and he directs his assistants to continue investigating that Pokémon in other regions.

His notable abilities lie mainly in his scientific expertise; he is regarded as a leading specialist in Mega Evolution and in the broader science of Pokémon evolution. He is also a competent though not outstanding battler who occasionally challenges trainers to matches, viewing battles as a way to deepen understanding and connection rather than as pure competition. His Garchomp, capable of Mega Evolution and of powerful moves such as Hyper Beam, is the strongest expression of his abilities as a researcher and as a partner to Pokémon.
