Description
Citron is a central character in the Pokémon XY & Z anime, serving as a companion to the protagonist Satoshi during his journey through the Kalos region. He is originally the official Gym Leader of the Lumiose City Gym, a position he holds with great pride despite the unusual circumstances surrounding it.

In terms of background, Citron is a young inventor with a profound passion for science and technology, a trait that defines almost every aspect of his personality. He firmly believes that progress is born from scientific advancement, a philosophy he often declares with enthusiasm. However, his inventions, which he stores in a large backpack he calls his Citronic Gear, are notoriously unreliable and almost invariably malfunction or explode shortly after activation. Despite these frequent failures, Citron never loses his zeal for creating new devices, from simple robotic arms to complex machines designed for various tasks. His most significant invention is a robot named Citroid, which he programmed to act as the Gym Leader in his place, as his passion for inventing often left him with little time for Gym battles.

His role in the story begins when he and his younger sister, Yurika, meet Satoshi in Lumiose City. Initially, Citron is too embarrassed to admit he is the Gym Leader, having been locked out of his own Gym by Citroid due to a programming error. After revealing his secret, he decides to leave the Gym in the care of his reprogrammed robot and join Satoshi on his travels across Kalos. During this journey, Citron acts as a kind and intelligent companion who often helps the group solve problems with his scientific knowledge. He also frequently assumes the role of cook for the group, showcasing a practical skill that complements his theoretical genius.

Citron's personality is a mix of earnestness, humility, and occasional nervousness. He is deeply kind-hearted and has a strong sense of responsibility, particularly towards his younger sister, Yurika. He is protective of her and often scolds her for her habit of asking every eligible woman she meets to marry him, a situation that repeatedly leaves him flustered and embarrassed. While he lacks Satoshi's natural athleticism and can become easily winded when running, he possesses a quiet courage and a determined will, sometimes performing surprising feats of agility when his friends are in danger. He deeply admires Satoshi's unwavering determination and his bond with his Pokémon, viewing him not just as a traveling companion but also as a friendly rival and a source of inspiration.

Key relationships are central to his character. His bond with his sister Yurika is one of the most prominent, as he acts as her primary guardian and caretaker, carrying her when she is tired and ensuring her safety. The two are inseparable, and her boundless energy often contrasts with his more reserved nature. With Satoshi, Citron shares a respectful rivalry, and their agreement to have an official Gym battle once Satoshi earns enough badges is a recurring motivation for both. He also forms a strong friendship with Serena, another traveling companion, and their dynamic is one of mutual support. His relationship with his Pokémon is built on care and respect, notably with his first partner Horubee, the gluttonous yet affectionate Harimaron who chose to travel with him, and the loyal Rentorar, a Pokémon he had known since childhood.

Throughout the series, Citron undergoes notable development. He begins as a capable but somewhat insecure Trainer who was pushed out of his own Gym. His journey with Satoshi helps him grow more confident in his own abilities as a Trainer and as an inventor. A significant turning point is his battle against Citroid to reclaim his Gym, where he proves his worth and officially reconciles his duties as a Gym Leader with his passion for travel and invention. By the end of his journey, he has evolved into a more assured leader, ready to take on the responsibility of his Gym while also looking forward to the future with his friends.

Citron possesses several notable abilities. As a Gym Leader specializing in Electric-type Pokémon, he is a skilled tactician in battle, often analyzing his opponent's weaknesses and using his Pokémon's moves in creative ways. His signature invention is the Aipom Arm, a mechanical attachment on his backpack that can extend to grab objects, save people from falls, or be used in combat. Beyond battling, his true genius lies in his inventive mind. While many of his creations explode, he is also capable of building incredibly sophisticated technology, including a fully functional and intelligent robot capable of operating a major Gym. He is also a proficient cook, handling the meal preparation for the entire traveling group, a role that highlights his caring and practical nature.
