TV-Series
Description
Korrina is the Gym Leader of Shalour City in the Kalos region, specialising in Fighting-type Pokémon. She is the granddaughter of Gurkinn, the Mega Evolution guru, and is the designated successor of the Tower of Mastery, a position that carries the responsibility of understanding and preserving the secrets of Mega Evolution. Korrina first appears in the series while travelling toward Geosenge Town, accompanied by her trusted partner Lucario, in search of a Lucarionite so that she can unlock Lucario’s Mega Evolution. She quickly strikes up a friendly rivalry with Ash Ketchum after challenging him to a battle, and she later joins Ash and his companions on part of their journey.
Personality-wise, Korrina is energetic, enthusiastic, and highly competitive. She approaches training and battles with a straightforward, action-first mindset and often acts on instinct and emotion rather than careful planning. This zeal sometimes leads her to equate winning with strengthening the bond between Trainer and Pokémon. Early in her arc, she believes that consecutive victories are the measure of a deep partnership. However, through her experiences with Lucario—particularly when its Mega Evolution initially goes out of control—she learns that genuine trust and mutual understanding are far more important than a win streak. She is also an expert roller skater, using skates as her primary mode of transportation, and has a habit of collecting the footprints of every Pokémon she battles, treating them as mementoes of her encounters.
Her central motivation is to master Mega Evolution and become a worthy successor to the Tower of Mastery’s legacy. She is determined to reach a point where she can Mega Evolve Lucario without losing control, and she sees this as both a personal goal and a duty to her grandfather and the tradition he represents. Throughout the storyline, she strives to deepen the connection with her Lucario, learning to listen to its feelings and to rely on its aura rather than imposing her will through sheer force.
In the overall narrative, Korrina serves as both a rival and a temporary ally. She travels with Ash, Serena, Clemont, and Bonnie for several episodes, during which she searches for the Lucarionite and trains with Ash’s guidance. Her gym battle against Ash is a major milestone, where she finally unleashes a stable Mega Lucario. After that battle, she returns to her duties as Gym Leader, but she reappears later during the World Coronation Series to battle Ash again, showcasing how much she and her Pokémon have grown. In these later encounters, she demonstrates a more refined battle style and a deeper bond with her team.
The most significant relationship in her life is with her Lucario. The two have been together since it was a Riolu, and Korrina considers them soulmates. Their bond is tested when Lucario’s first Mega Evolution causes it to rampage, but through training and emotional reconciliation they eventually achieve perfect synchronisation. Korrina also shares a close, respectful bond with her grandfather Gurkinn, who serves as her mentor. With Ash, she develops a mutual respect born from repeated battles and shared training; she views him as a worthy rival and a friend.
Korrina’s notable abilities extend beyond her roller-skating agility. She is a skilled Fighting-type specialist, commanding Pokémon such as Machoke, Mienfoo, Mienshao, and most prominently Lucario. Her signature technique is the coordination of Lucario’s power with her own aura sensing, which allows her to direct its attacks with precision. She is able to perform Mega Evolution with Lucario, and after mastering it the transformation becomes stable and fluid. Her battle approach favours aggressive, high-speed offense, often using moves like Power-Up Punch and Bone Rush to overwhelm opponents. She also has a keen talent for reading the flow of battle, a skill that improves markedly over the course of her appearances.
