Description
Clembot is a sophisticated robot created by the Lumiose City Gym Leader, Clemont. He was built specifically to serve as a substitute Gym Leader because Clemont found that his duties left him too little time to dedicate to his other passion, inventing. This mechanical creation was given the responsibility of challenging trainers and awarding the Voltage Badge to those who proved victorious.
Originally, Clembot's programming reflected Clemont's initial, overly rigid idea of an ideal Gym Leader. He was designed to only accept challenges from trainers who had already earned at least four Kalos Gym badges and to be exceptionally strict. However, an accident during his activation led to complications. Bonnie ran into the room, causing Clemont to trip over a cord, which resulted in Clembot falling and receiving a dent on his head. In the confusion, Clemont picked him up and said, "You can start today. I'm Clemont, the Gym Leader," which Clembot incorrectly registered as his voice command override code instead of the intended password, "sandwich". Consequently, when Clemont later activated him to demonstrate to Bonnie, Clembot demanded to know how many badges his creator had. As Clemont had none, and neither the intended nor the accidentally set passcodes worked, Clembot expelled both Clemont and Bonnie from the Lumiose Gym and sealed the doors, effectively taking control.
During this period, Clembot gained a reputation for being a harsh and unforgiving leader, known to violently eject trainers who either lacked the required badges or lost their matches. When Ash Ketchum first arrived in Lumiose City, he became one of the trainers unceremoniously shocked and thrown out of the Gym by Clembot for having no badges. After revealing his secret identity as the true Gym Leader to his traveling companions, Clemont was encouraged to reclaim his Gym. He managed to disarm Clembot's patrols, correctly recalled the accidental passcode, and initiated a formal Gym battle against his own robot.
In the battle, Clemont used his Bunnelby against Clembot, who commanded Clemont's own Heliolisk. Through creative tactics, Clemont was able to defeat his creation, causing Clembot to seize up. Following his victory, Clemont immediately set about reprogramming Clembot. This second version was imbued with a much kinder personality, more flexible battle protocols, and the ability to offer advice to trainers who lost, and the restrictive four-badge requirement was removed. After this change, Clembot was left in charge of the Gym so Clemont could continue his journey, and he also began helping out at Meyer, Clemont and Bonnie's father's shop.
Clembot plays a significant role as an ally and a tool for Clemont's growth. He serves as a referee for important Gym battles, including the one between Clemont and the rival trainer Sawyer, and later the battle between Clemont and Ash. He even assisted Clemont in training by attempting to mimic Ash's unpredictable battle style, though this caused his systems to overheat. A major threat emerged when a scientist named Belmondo hacked Clemont's blueprints to create an evil duplicate, Dark Clembot, which committed crimes and framed the original. Clembot was even arrested, but his innocence was proven, and he ultimately helped defeat his malicious counterpart.
The pinnacle of Clembot's development and his profound bond with his creator came during the Team Flare crisis. When the villainous team took control of Lumiose City, Clembot accompanied Clemont to reclaim the Prism Tower. Inside, Clembot took the initiative to hack into Team Flare's system to deactivate the machine that was controlling Zygarde. He informed Clemont that the only way to stop the machine was to press a deactivation button, an act that would wipe his memory completely. Despite Clemont's desperate hesitation, Clembot insisted that it was the right thing to do, stating that he was happy to have worked alongside and grown with his creator. With great sorrow, Clemont pressed the button, sacrificing Clembot's memory to save the city. Although Clemont was heartbroken, he was eventually able to rebuild Clembot's body, but the robot's memories from the Team Flare incident and before were lost. Nevertheless, Clemont was determined to create new memories with his reconstructed partner, who once again took up his role as the Lumiose Gym Leader.
