TV-Series
Description
Professor Sycamore, whose full name is Augustine Sycamore, is a Pokémon researcher and the official Pokémon Professor of the Kalos region in the anime Pokémon XY & Z. He is a middle-aged man with black, curly hair, bluish eyes, and subtle facial hair near his ears, and he typically appears in a white lab coat worn over stylish civilian clothing. His laboratory is located in Lumiose City, where many new trainers receive their first Pokémon, but he is just as comfortable outdoors, often seen riding his Gogoat through the city rather than staying behind a desk.

Sycamore's background as a researcher is marked by a deep interest in evolution, with a special focus on Mega Evolution. He has written a book on the subject and personally acquired a Garchomp that is able to Mega Evolve so that he can study the phenomenon firsthand. In the anime, he is responsible for giving the three Kalos starter Pokémon, Chespin, Fennekin, and Froakie, to beginning trainers, with Ash receiving Froakie, Serena receiving Fennekin, and Clemont receiving Chespin. He is also described as having once been an apprentice of Professor Rowan of the Sinnoh region, which shaped his scientific approach.

In terms of personality, Sycamore is warm, enthusiastic, and highly supportive of young trainers. He treats those around him with genuine kindness and enjoys watching them grow, often encouraging them with humor and charm. He has a playful and slightly absent-minded side, but when the subject turns to Pokémon research, especially Mega Evolution and the bond between people and Pokémon, he becomes focused and serious. Unlike many of his fellow professors, he is not content to observe from a distance and sometimes challenges trainers to Pokémon battles as part of his hands-on research style.

His main motivation is to understand the deeper connections between humans and Pokémon, particularly the mysterious bond phenomenon that later appears between Ash and Greninja. He views this bond as a possible step beyond Mega Evolution and dedicates much of his research to it. This curiosity places him at the center of the story's most important developments, as the secrets he investigates are directly tied to the Legendary Pokémon Zygarde and the plans of Team Flare.

Within the story, Sycamore first becomes involved when Ash, Clemont, and Bonnie bring an injured Froakie to him, and he continues to act as a mentor and source of knowledge for the group throughout their journey. His laboratory serves as a gathering place for trainers, and he regularly offers guidance, supplies, and information. In the XY & Z arc, his role expands considerably, as his research into Zygarde and the bond phenomenon becomes essential in understanding and opposing Team Flare's destructive ambitions. He uses his scientific knowledge to help protect Kalos rather than remaining a passive observer.

Sycamore's key relationships center on the trainers he supports. He shows particular interest in Ash, whose connection with Greninja fascinates him and pushes his research in new directions. He is equally supportive of Serena, Clemont, and Bonnie, as well as other young trainers starting their journeys. A notable relationship in his life is with Alain, a talented trainer who previously worked alongside him in research on Mega Evolution. Alain later becomes Ash's rival and becomes entangled with Team Flare, giving Sycamore a personal stake in the conflict and leading to an eventual reexamination of Alain's choices. He also maintains a respectful connection to his own former teacher, Professor Rowan.

Over the course of the series, Sycamore develops from a well-meaning regional scholar into a more active figure who is willing to put his expertise on the line. His willingness to accept new ideas, such as the possibility that the bond between Ash and Greninja represents something beyond Mega Evolution, shows an open-mindedness that defines his character. His integrity and care for both people and Pokémon ultimately guide his decisions, and his research proves decisive in the struggle against Team Flare.

In terms of notable abilities, Sycamore is a knowledgeable and capable Pokémon professor with a strong command of evolutionary science. He can battle effectively, as shown when he uses his Garchomp, which he can Mega Evolve into Mega Garchomp during demonstrations and battles. His Gogoat serves as his practical means of transportation around Lumiose City, reflecting his active, field-oriented approach. Beyond battling, his greatest strength is his insight, as his understanding of Mega Evolution, Zygarde, and the bond phenomenon provides crucial answers during the most serious events of the series.
