Description
Mr. Match, known in the Japanese version as Ken'ichi Hino or Hinoken for short, is a character from the anime MegaMan NT Warrior. He is the operator of TorchMan.EXE and briefly operates HeatMan.EXE. His background begins as one of the four primary agents of the criminal organization World Three, also called the WWW. He is the first antagonist that the protagonist Lan Hikari and his NetNavi MegaMan.EXE encounter, committing arson by using viruses to overheat household ovens under the orders of the WWW leader, Mr. Wily.
Personality wise, Mr. Match has a short temper and a fiery, passionate nature. He loves battle and frequently uses fire-related puns. As an enemy, he is persistent and vows to defeat Lan and MegaMan, taking pride in his skills and his fire-type NetNavis. He treats his Navis as valued partners, unlike some of his fellow agents who take theirs for granted. His motivations initially center on serving Mr. Wily and causing chaos in both the real world and the cyber world. He enjoys the thrill of arson and the challenge of net battles.
In the story, Mr. Match carries out several schemes: setting fires in homes, attempting to overheat electronics to lure MegaMan, and participating in the N1 Grand Prix tournament where he uses a Battle Chip to concentrate solar energy to power up TorchMan. After the fall of the World Three, he becomes more law abiding. Yahoot opens a curry restaurant called #1 Curry, and Mr. Match works there as a delivery man. He aids Lan on multiple occasions and gradually becomes a friend and ally to the heroes throughout the series. Despite this, he and his fellow former WWW members secretly wish for the return of Mr. Wily and the revival of the organization, though they are unaware that their leader does not share this desire.
Key relationships include his close bond with TorchMan, and later HeatMan. He works alongside other WWW agents such as Maddy, Count Zap, and Yahoot. His relationship with Lan evolves from bitter rivalry to reluctant friendship, as he assists Lan against newer threats even while holding onto old aspirations. He also develops a fondness for a hot dog vendor in one storyline, which influences him to abandon a plan to blow up a stadium.
Notable abilities include his talent as a fire dancer, often performing at tropical vacation spots. As a NetNavis operator, he is strategically creative, using environmental factors like sunlight to empower his Navi. His English dub portrayal gives him a Scottish accent, adding a distinct vocal character. Over the course of the anime, Mr. Match never returns to full criminal activity and instead becomes a supporting figure, though his fiery temperament remains a constant trait.
