Description
NumberMan is a green-and-white NetNavi whose combat style and appearance are built around numbers, dice, and calculation. He is the NetNavi of Mr. Higsby in the MegaMan NT Warrior anime, and the pair are introduced as villains. In their debut, Higsby uses NumberMan to trap several students and their teacher in a classroom and to challenge Yai Ayano to a NetBattle for her rare Battle Chips. NumberMan creates barriers that seal the room and nearly defeats Glide before MegaMan and Roll break through. After NumberMan is defeated, Higsby is scolded by Ms. Mari and promises to behave, and from that point on the two are reformed characters who act as recurring allies to Lan Hikari, MegaMan, and their friends.

As a background, NumberMan began as a NetNavi affiliated with the criminal organization World Three, carrying out Higsby's schemes to collect rare chips. After their reformation, he becomes a familiar presence around Higsby's Battle Chip shop, effectively serving as its helper and mascot. He appears across multiple seasons of the anime, including the original series, Axess, and Beast, and his role gradually shifts from minor antagonist to dependable supporting ally.

In terms of personality, NumberMan is loyal, cautious, and often the voice of reason in his partnership with Higsby. He frequently tries to talk Higsby out of his more reckless or embarrassing plans, particularly those connected to winning Ms. Mari's affection, and he is shown working hard to support the shop. He is not one of the stronger combatants in the cast, and he struggles with anxiety and self-doubt. His fearfulness is visible in moments of extreme danger, such as when he initially attempts to challenge the Grave Virus Beast but quickly Jacks Out in fright and afterwards complains that Higsby did not pull him out sooner. He also has a tendency to depend heavily on rare Battle Chips during fights, a weakness that contributes to his loss against WoodMan in the N1 Grand Prix. Despite these flaws, he is dependable in a crisis and willing to place himself at risk for others, as shown when he fights off a large number of viruses on his own while disconnected from Higsby during an attack on NetCity.

His motivations shift over the course of the story. Early on, he acts to help Higsby obtain rare chips by any means. After reforming, his main motivations are supporting Higsby, protecting their shop, and proving that he can be a useful and reliable NetNavi. He shows a genuine desire to contribute meaningfully in serious situations, and his willingness to cooperate with MegaMan reflects a growing sense of responsibility and confidence.

NumberMan's key relationship is with Mr. Higsby, his operator and closest partner. The two share a strong bond, and NumberMan often supports Higsby's efforts, whether that means running the shop, assisting in his attempts to impress Ms. Mari, or participating in tournaments. His relationship with MegaMan and Lan evolves from rivalry to friendship. In the Axess season, NumberMan suggests that he and MegaMan work together against SpoutMan, leading to a fusion that grants MegaMan the Number Soul, and the two succeed in stopping SpoutMan's rampage at a power plant. MegaMan also rescues NumberMan when he is captured and nearly deleted by BowlMan during a cyber bowling incident. NumberMan interacts with other NetNavis as a peer, competing against them in tournaments and joining them in coordinated operations, such as the mission near the end of Axess to help stop a Cross Fused LaserMan by destroying the viruses guarding the Dimensional Area Generator.

His development is marked by a clear arc from antagonist to trusted ally. He learns from his losses, including his N1 Grand Prix defeat caused by over-reliance on rare chips. He faces his fears imperfectly, showing hesitation and retreat when confronted with overwhelming threats, but he also demonstrates growth by standing with the group during major battles and by contributing to the successful fusion with MegaMan. In the Beast season, an impostor version of him, a Zoanoroid, briefly steals his identity and deceives his friends, but the real NumberMan is recognized and the impostor is later destroyed, an event that highlights how established his identity and friendships have become.

NumberMan's notable abilities are tied to mathematics and randomness. He can throw a Dice Bomb, known as Doom Dice in the English version of the anime, which explodes with damage determined by a dice roll. He can launch Number Balls down the battlefield, with each ball displaying how much damage it deals. He also has access to a Time Bomb and a Number Trap that can trigger various effects on opponents. For close combat, he uses a tenbou, a stick used for keeping score in mahjong, as a sword or even a baseball bat. He is capable of creating barriers within the Net, as seen during his debut, and can manipulate networked systems, such as when he alters a cyber bowling setup to guarantee strikes. When fused with MegaMan as the Number Soul, he grants advanced trajectory calculation and high-speed process analysis, abilities that allow the pair to devise precise tactical solutions in battle. Overall, NumberMan is a thoughtful, well-meaning NetNavi whose growth from scheming opponent to loyal and capable ally makes him a steady presence among the anime's supporting cast.
