Description
In the anime MegaMan NT Warrior, Higsby, known in Japan as Yamitaro Higure, is a character whose deep-seated passion for rare Battle Chips defines his journey from a misguided antagonist to a steadfast, if eccentric, ally. He is the operator of the NetNavi NumberMan.EXE.

Higsby is, above all else, a dedicated collector. His obsession with obtaining rare and powerful Battle Chips is the primary force behind his actions, especially early in the series. This passion, when uncontrolled, leads him down a dishonest path. He makes his first appearance as an antagonist, having staged a hostage situation within Lan Hikari's school. His scheme involved trapping several students and their teacher, Ms. Mari, in a classroom to force the wealthy Yai Ayano to surrender her collection of rare chips. This incident reveals that his love for chips can, at first, overshadow his moral compass.

However, following a direct confrontation by Lan and a heartfelt appeal from Ms. Mari, Higsby recognizes the error of his ways and reforms. Instead of stealing chips, he chooses to dedicate his life to them in a more positive manner by opening his own Battle Chip shop. This shop becomes his primary role in the series: a purveyor of knowledge and equipment for other NetOps. Despite his reformation, his core obsession remains a source of good-natured flaw, as he is known to be a poor businessman because he refuses to sell the rarest chips from his own collection.

In terms of personality, Higsby is excitable, often flustered, and prone to worrying. He has pronounced physical and social shortcomings: he is notably poor at athletics and has a terrible sense of direction, frequently getting lost. His most prominent personal quirk is his deep, unspoken crush on Ms. Mari. He becomes hopelessly tongue-tied and nervous around her, which puts him in direct comedic rivalry with a character named Maysa, as both compete for her affection. He is also known in the Japanese version of the show for ending his sentences with the polite but somewhat incongruous phrase “demasu”.

Regarding key relationships, his bond with his NetNavi, NumberMan, is one of partnership, though Higsby’s obsession can sometimes get them into trouble. NumberMan possesses computational and processing powers, which Higsby often relies on for strategic advantages, sometimes even to cheat in athletic competitions. Later in the series, Higsby becomes a positive influence on the pessimistic Shuko Kido. Seeing his ability to remain upbeat and persevere despite his many misfortunes and personal failings inspires her, leading her to become his loyal employee.

Over the course of the series, Higsby undergoes significant development, transitioning from a small-time criminal to a respected member of the community. While his core character traits remain, he learns to apply his encyclopedic knowledge of Battle Chips for the benefit of his friends. He frequently aids Lan and his friends by using his expertise to steer them away from dangerous chips or by providing them with strategic advice and supplies during crises.

Notable abilities of Higsby relate less to physical combat and more to his specialized knowledge. He is a walking encyclopedia on Battle Chips, and his strategic mind allows him to use NumberMan’s abilities to calculate trajectories and process high-level analyses. In the Net, NumberMan fights using dice-based attacks and, at Higsby’s direction, can manipulate data systems to create barriers or cheat at games, though Higsby’s own poor athletic and navigational skills are a recurring foil to this technological prowess.
