TV-Series
Description
Kanako Kurusu is a friend and classmate of Kirino Kousaka and Ayase Aragaki, also working as a part-time fashion model alongside them. She is fourteen years old, with a small stature of 148 centimeters. Her ultimate ambition is to become a successful idol singer, a goal she pursues with considerable determination.
In her public performances, Kanako can project a sweet and adorable persona, but her true personality is notably different. She is typically bratty, arrogant, and speaks with brutal honesty, often making blunt or disrespectful comments about others without hesitation. Despite acknowledging that Kirino’s otaku hobbies are "gross" and generally finding anime and otaku culture disgusting, she remains friends with her, demonstrating a level of acceptance beneath her harsh exterior. Kanako craves praise and adoration; while she may look down on the fans who give it, she deeply enjoys the attention and validation their applause provides.
Her role in the story becomes most prominent when Ayase forces her to participate in a cosplay contest dressed as Meruru, Kirino’s favorite magical girl character. Despite hating the experience, Kanako wins the contest due to her natural talent, which unexpectedly launches her career as the official Meruru cosplayer for various events. This event marks a turning point, leading to her increased involvement with the main cast, including Kirino’s brother, Kyousuke.
Kanako shares a close friendship with Ayase and Kirino, often seen in their company at school. Her older sister is Kanata Kurusu, a manga artist with whom she lives after running away from home due to a poor relationship with her parents. Her relationship with Kyousuke evolves from one of initial indifference, where she doesn't even remember meeting him, to one of genuine affection. Over time, she comes to see him as an important supporter, calling him her "first fan," and she eventually develops romantic feelings for him. She also seeks to reconcile with her parents by learning to cook, taking lessons from Manami Tamura at Ayase’s referral.
Throughout the series, Kanako shows signs of development beyond her bratty demeanor. Her deep-seated desire for a successful career as an idol motivates her to practice singing and dancing regularly. She demonstrates a professional work ethic, memorizing songs perfectly after hearing them only once. Despite her often selfish and arrogant behavior, she can show a caring side, such as when she tries to help a friend she perceives to be in danger. By the end of the story, she matures enough to confess her feelings to Kyousuke, and though she is rejected, she resolves to focus on her career moving forward.
