Description
Ryo Bakura, as depicted in the film Yu-Gi-Oh!: The Dark Side of Dimensions, carries the weight of a tragic past that directly sets the film's events into motion. While he appears as a gentle and somewhat shy high school student, his history is deeply intertwined with the dark magic of the Millennium Ring, an ancient artifact he has possessed since childhood.

In his everyday life, Bakura is a kind-hearted and polite young man, though he possesses a socially awkward demeanor. He is a close friend of Yugi Mutou and his circle, and he shares a deep passion for games of all kinds, particularly tabletop role-playing games. His favorite is Monster World, a game that holds significant personal meaning for him. Despite his gentle nature, Bakura is also an isolated figure, partly due to the dangerous artifact he carries and the traumatic events it has caused. The film's character designer, Kazuki Takahashi, noted that Bakura is a uniquely solitary figure, always seeming strangely alone and self-aware. His film design also reflects a subtle shift, with his features drawn to more closely resemble his malevolent alter ego, hinting at the darkness that has long been a part of his life.

Bakura's central role in The Dark Side of Dimensions is not as an active participant in the main duels, but as the catalyst for the entire conflict. Years before the film's present, a young Bakura accompanied his father to Egypt. There, his father attempted to claim the Millennium Ring but was rejected by its power. When Bakura rushed to his fallen father and picked up the Ring, he was immediately possessed by an evil spirit, Dark Bakura. Under the spirit's control, Bakura's body murdered Shadi, the guardian of the Millennium Items, and attacked a group of children known as the Prana, who were under Shadi's protection. One of those children, who would grow up to become the antagonist Aigami, was left alive but scarred, fueling a deep-seated hatred that drives the film's plot. This event is a pivotal and tragic part of Bakura's history, establishing why he feels a profound sense of guilt for actions he did not consciously commit.

Bakura's relationships are central to his character. He shares a genuine and warm friendship with Yugi Mutou, as well as with Joey Wheeler, Tristan Taylor, and Téa Gardner. They represent the normal life and companionship he craves, a stark contrast to the darkness he harbors. His most significant and troubled relationship is with his other self, Yami Bakura, the spirit of the Millennium Ring. Unlike the cooperative bond between Yugi and his other self, Yami Bakura is a purely malignant entity who seeks to use Bakura's body for his own sinister goals. For much of the original series, Bakura was a passive host, often unaware of the spirit's actions. However, the film shows a development in his character, as he actively confronts the consequences of his dark half's past. He expresses remorse for the murder of Shadi, demonstrating a sense of responsibility that he was previously unable to feel. He also disappears into another dimension alongside Joey at one point, highlighting his increased willingness to face danger.

His notable abilities are not related to physical prowess or Duel Monsters strategy, but rather to his creativity and quiet willpower. Bakura is a skilled designer and builder of detailed tabletop game dioramas, a talent that showcases his artistic and strategic thinking. More importantly, his most powerful ability is his inner resilience. Despite being the host to an evil spirit for years, he never fully succumbs to its influence. His love for his friends and his gentle spirit repeatedly allow him to resist Yami Bakura's control from within, proving that his quiet strength is a formidable force in its own right.
