Description
Garie Tûmân is a character from the anime Symphogear GX, serving as one of the primary antagonists. She is an Autoscorer, a type of advanced, multi-purpose automatons created by the alchemist Carol Malus Dienheim. Her formal model number is XMH 020. Her name is derived from a variation of the archangel Gabriel, while her surname comes from an Arabic word for cup, which aligns with her thematic association with the suit of cups or hearts in tarot.
In terms of appearance, Garie has a doll-like, youthful look characterized by black hair and green eyes, often dressed in gothic-inspired attire. This outward appearance is deceptive, as her personality is notably combative, arrogant, and sadistic. She speaks in a playful, flirtatious, and girlish tone, frequently taunting her opponents. However, this lighthearted demeanor masks a deep-seated lust for combat and a cruel nature. She finds weakness contemptible and enjoys toying with her enemies, such as when she feigns letting victims escape only to ambush them for her own satisfaction. Despite her bravado, she is prone to jealousy and seeks approval from her creator, Carol. This is especially evident in her rivalry with her sister unit, Micha Jawkān, whom Carol praises as the strongest, a fact that visibly upsets Garie.
Motivation drives Garie primarily from a desire for recognition and a belief that strength is the only thing that matters. She is intensely dedicated to fulfilling her role in Carol’s grand plan, even serving as the vessel for the power of the Holy Grail. Part of her mission involves collecting human memories, which she does with a kiss that rapidly ages and kills the victim. As the Holy Grail, she possesses a greater capacity to store these memories and is responsible for transferring them to her sister Micha, who cannot absorb memories on her own.
Her role in the story is that of a field operative and guardian for Carol. She is often sent to collect memories, summon Alca-Noise to attack the protagonists, and directly engage the wielders of the Symphogear. Her primary human adversary is Maria Cadenzavna Eve. Garie initially takes an interest in Maria and spares her twice when the Symphogear user was unable to provide a satisfying fight. The final confrontation between them occurs when Maria, successfully harnessing the power of the Ignite Module, overpowers Garie and destroys her, splitting the Autoscorer in two.
Regarding her development, Garie shows little change in her core personality throughout her active time in the story. Her defining moment comes at her destruction, which is revealed to be a calculated part of Carol’s larger scheme, as her defeat is necessary for the Alca-Noise to record a specific melody. She reappears briefly in a later season, Symphogear XV, in a damaged and weakened state, having been discarded and then hastily reactivated. In this appearance, she assists in protecting Elfnein before finally powering down peacefully once her master, Carol, achieves a state of return.
As an Autoscorer, Garie wields several notable abilities. Her combat style is graceful and based on the movements of ballet, allowing her to evade attacks with elegance. Her primary power is alchemical control over the element of water. She can use moisture in the air to create solid barriers of ice, skate on ice paths for enhanced mobility, and launch high-pressure water jets as projectiles. Furthermore, she can manipulate water vapor to create optical illusions and mirror images, a tactic she uses effectively to confuse her enemies. Beyond her elemental powers, she possesses superhuman strength and durability, enough to easily subdue a berserk Maria with her bare hands.
