TV-Series
Description
Gloria Ogata, known in Japan as Gloria Ookanda, is the strict and formidable headmistress of Paprika Private Academy, the elementary school attended by the main characters. She has long, pale silver-gray hair styled into a large curled side ponytail and sharp golden eyes, often accentuated with red lipstick and fuchsia-colored eye makeup. Her standard attire is a regal purple dress with gold and white accents, befitting her authoritative position.
Her personality is defined by an intense rigidity and a deep-seated aversion to friendship, which fuels her role as the primary antagonist in the early part of the story. She is exceedingly strict, persistent, and known for her acute sense of smell, which she uses to hunt down and confiscate PriTickets from her students using a specialized vacuum cleaner she has named Rina. This ban on attending the world of PriPara is her central decree, making her a feared figure among the student body. Despite her stern exterior, she possesses a gullible side and her character is often played for humor, as seen in her over-the-top methods of enforcement and her inability to physically approach a PriPara entrance for an extended period.
Her motivations stem from a painful personal history. In her youth, Gloria was herself an idol in PriPara under the nickname Sugar. There, she formed a close friendship and a performance team with another girl named Himeka Manaka. Gloria came to believe that Himeka had broken an important promise to meet her, an event that left her feeling deeply abandoned. This perceived betrayal caused her to reject not only PriPara but the very concept of friendship, leading her to become the oppressive headmistress who forbids her students from participating in the idol activities she once loved.
Throughout the first major story arc, Gloria serves as the principal obstacle for the aspiring idol Laala Manaka. Her role shifts dramatically from an adversary to a supporter following a critical revelation in episode twenty-five. It is discovered that the broken promise was a misunderstanding; Himeka had tried to find her but neither recognized the other due to the physical transformations that occur within the PriPara world. Once the truth is revealed, Gloria has a complete change of heart. She lifts her ban on PriPara, returns the confiscated PriTickets to all her students, and reconciles with her past. Following this development, she becomes a supportive figure and even begins attending PriPara herself once again.
In the aftermath of her redemption, new aspects of her personality and key relationships emerge. She develops a romantic admiration for the school's technical director, Meganii Akai, whom she addresses as Meganii-sama. Her established relationships include being the younger sister of Ploria Ookanda and a cousin to a character named Barbaria. Her notable abilities, aside from her talent for sniffing out contraband PriTickets, are those of a Celeb-type idol, and she is recognized as the first idol in the series to change her brand from her days as Sugar.
