Description
Miaou is the name given to a Betelgeusian, a cat-like alien from the Betelgeuse binary star system, who becomes a main character in Space Dandy Season 2. His original name, which Dandy and QT cannot understand, is Mymyamo. Dandy renames him Miaou because of his feline appearance.
Miaou's background involves leaving his home planet and eventually being mistaken for a rare alien species by Dandy during a visit to the intergalactic restaurant chain Boobies. After a brief scuffle, Dandy decides to take him on as a crew member, believing he might be useful. In practice, Miaou is lazy and often lounges around the ship rather than contributing to the team's alien-hunting missions.
Personality-wise, Miaou is depicted as dimwitted and not particularly intelligent, a trait frequently noted by QT. He struggles academically, as evidenced by low grades on old school papers found in his bedroom. However, he may have a hidden talent for art, shown by a competent drawing of his childhood dream to become a metalworker like his father. He shares Dandy's fondness for visiting Boobies and ogling the waitstaff, and he is an avid user of his touch-screen phone, often posting updates online. Miaou also considers himself a ramen connoisseur and loves eating ramen.
His primary motivation is to enjoy life with minimal effort, often seeking comfort, food, and entertainment. He is not driven by ambition or a desire for wealth, and he frequently acts without thinking, which can cause problems for the crew.
In the story, Miaou serves as a comic relief character and a sidekick to Dandy. He is part of the main trio alongside Dandy and the robot QT, and he appears in all episodes of Season 2. Despite his lack of competence, he occasionally proves useful, such as when his phone inadvertently tracks their location or when his simple-mindedness leads to unexpected solutions. He is also responsible for triggering the warp drive incorrectly, sending the ship into another dimension in the first episode.
Miaou's key relationships include his bond with Dandy, whom he follows loyally even though Dandy often treats him dismissively. QT frequently exasperated by Miaou's laziness and lack of intellect, but the three form a makeshift family. Miaou has no romantic interests shown, but he interacts with other characters such as Honey, a waitress at Boobies, and various aliens encountered during missions.
Over the course of the season, Miaou shows minimal character development, remaining consistently lazy and carefree. However, poignant moments appear in episodes that explore his past, such as when Dandy and QT discover his father's workshop, hinting at a more sentimental side. In the zombie episode, Miaou is bitten first and becomes a zombie, but the crew adapts to their new state. In the season finale, he participates in the multiverse-spanning adventure and survives.
Notable abilities of Miaou are limited. He has no special combat skills or intelligence. His cat-like appearance may provide some agility, but it is not emphasized. His most prominent ability is his knack for getting into trouble and inadvertently leading the crew to situations, both good and bad. He also has a resilient survival instinct, as he somehow manages to avoid permanent harm despite numerous dangers.
