Description
Olivier Gaillard is a Vanguard fighter from the anime Cardfight!! Vanguard: Legion Mate-Hen and one of the four members of the Quatre Knights, acting as the group's leader and bearing the title Gaillard of the Blue Flame. He was the European Circuit Champion and, during the earlier Link Joker crisis, he fought against the invasion and provided assistance in the effort to eradicate the Link Joker threat. His connection to Vanguard began at an orphanage, where he received a Gold Paladin card that drew him into the game. During the Link Joker crisis he was effectively fighting alone, and at one point he was forced to battle even the children of his own facility after they became Reverse fighters. Aichi Sendou's victory over Link Joker ended the crisis and spared him from that desperate situation, and Aichi also helped a child named Nicola overcome the trauma of the events, which deepened Gaillard's reverence for him. Aichi later recruited Gaillard into the Quatre Knights, and Gaillard came to describe himself as the one who inherited Aichi's will.
In manner, Gaillard is calm, courteous, and soft-spoken, but beneath that composure he is intensely passionate and proud. He treats Aichi with deep respect, referring to him with honorifics and insisting that he will do anything to prevent anyone from disturbing Aichi's slumber. He is openly hostile toward Toshiki Kai, blaming him for the Link Joker invasion and for Aichi's involvement in that conflict, and he approaches fights against Kai without mercy. His devotion also makes him stubborn, especially when questioned about Aichi's disappearance, and he responds to challenges by trying to force the questioners to abandon their search.
Within Legion Mate-Hen, Gaillard is one of the principal antagonists in the early portion of the story. He confronts Kai at a card shop and defeats him in a fight, warning him not to interfere with Aichi's sleep. Later, when Kai and his allies pursue leads regarding Aichi, Gaillard appears again and defeats Naoki Ishida, and he also defeats Kamui Katsuragi while continuing to guard the path toward Aichi. His role changes when Raul Serra, another member of the Quatre Knights, betrays the group and traps Gaillard, Kai, and Naoki. With their goals briefly aligned, Gaillard reluctantly explains the truth of Aichi's situation to Kai and agrees to cooperate. It is also revealed that Gaillard, along with Rati Curti and Philippe Neve, had been manipulated into opposing the search for Aichi.
His most significant relationship is with Aichi Sendou, whom he regards as a hero and benefactor. His relationship with Kai evolves dramatically, beginning with hatred and resentment and ending with mutual respect; after the events of the season, he acknowledges Kai as a friend and invites him to compete in the European league. He is also connected to his fellow Quatre Knights, including Rati Curti, Philippe Neve, and the later traitor Raul Serra, and he works alongside Kourin Tatsunagi, who serves as the group's guiding figure. In later series he remains active in Europe, teaming up with Kai and Philippe Neve in the professional league, participating in Plan-G during the Gear Crisis, and later aiding efforts against the threats of the Apostles, while speaking warmly of Kai in a later interview.
As a fighter, Gaillard is world class, as demonstrated by his European Circuit Championship. He uses Gold Paladin decks built around the Liberator and Bluish Flame archetypes, with cards such as Liberator Monarch Sanctuary Alfred, Liberator Gancelot Zenith, Bluish Flame Liberator Percival, Bluish Flame Liberator Prominence Core, and Bluish Flame Liberator Prominence GLAER, and the color of his Vanguard Circle is dark blue. Like the other Quatre Knights, he possesses a special power tied to his fights: he can create a prison of blue flames called Holy Prominence Prison, and when he wins a fight, the flames descend upon the loser as his judgment. He is defeated by Kai in a key encounter at the Moon Palace, where his loss breaks the second seal protecting Aichi, and he later faces Kai once more without using his prison in order to test Kai's resolve before the events conclude. In the film Cardfight!! Vanguard: Neon Messiah, he participates in the Messiah Scramble tournament, where he loses to Souryuu Leon. He has blue hair and brown eyes.
