Description
Adam Muirhead is a key supporting character in the series, a young man who serves as a member of the DOGOO organization's second squad. He is an E-Gene Holder, which means he possesses the genetic legacy and abilities of a historical figure, in his case the infamous serial killer Jack the Ripper. Within his squad, he is initially the only member capable of frontline combat, acting as its primary offensive force before the protagonist joins.
Physically, Adam is a teenager with gray hair that reaches his neck and sharp, noticeable teeth. His appearance often carries an air of menace, but this belies a more complex personality. He is characterized by a cynical and impulsive nature, possessing a sharp tongue and a tendency toward a blunt, confrontational demeanor. He has a strong dislike for half-hearted or incomplete efforts, which aligns with his straightforward and aggressive fighting style. Despite this rough exterior, he is not cruel; his actions are often motivated by a genuine, if gruff, desire to protect others, and he is capable of showing care for his comrades, particularly as the series progresses.
The central twist of Adam's character is the true nature of his E-Gene. It is revealed that the historical Jack the Ripper was, in reality, Florence Nightingale, the famed nurse. In this narrative, Nightingale adopted the persona of Jack the Ripper to hunt down and kill women who had been infected by a dangerous, alien biological agent, effectively working to prevent a larger catastrophe. This recontextualizes the source of Adam's power not as pure madness or evil, but as a grim and necessary duty. This duality allows him to access a secondary power set, a mode called Nightingale Mode, which manifests as bladed wings that grant him flight and enhanced speed. The voice of his E-Gene also seems to guide him, compelling him to act when the world is in danger.
Adam's role in the story is deeply intertwined with that of the protagonist, Shio Ogura. He is the first E-Gene Holder she encounters in battle. When Adam is gravely wounded during a fight in Taiwan, Shio touches his E-Gene ball, which triggers the awakening of her own powers as the holder of Oda Nobunaga's soul. This event marks the beginning of their partnership. Their relationship is initially tense and built on mutual irritation; Adam finds Shio's inexperience frustrating, while Shio is intimidated by his aggressive attitude. However, they develop a strong bond of mutual respect and trust through numerous battles. He often finds himself in the position of having to look out for her, and their connection ultimately evolves into a romantic one, with the two admitting their feelings for each other by the series' end.
Within the second squad, Adam works alongside Mahesh Mirza, the E-Gene Holder of Mahatma Gandhi who creates defensive force fields, and Jess Beckham, the Holder of Isaac Newton who manipulates gravity. Adam's purely offensive capabilities make him the squad's vanguard, a role he fulfills with enthusiasm and a noticeable love for battle. His development throughout the story sees him mature from a lone, cynical fighter into a more reliable teammate who learns to fight in concert with others. His most significant personal development comes with the discovery and acceptance of his E-Gene's true history as Florence Nightingale, unlocking new abilities and giving a deeper, more altruistic meaning to his violent powers.
Adam's notable abilities are channeled through his AU weapon, called Jack the Ripper's Slash. In its standard form, it is a large blade attached to his wrist, assembled from five smaller knives of different shapes. This weapon is designed for close-quarters combat and is highly effective at cutting through the enemy creatures known as Evolutionary Invasion Objects. His special technique, Nightingale Mode, transforms his weapon, causing a set of bladed wings to emerge from his back. This mode significantly enhances his mobility, granting him the ability to fly and move at high speeds, making him a much more agile and deadly combatant.
