TV-Series
Description
Kanade Kohinata is a second-year student at Seiso Academy, where she belongs to the music department and is a violin major. Originating from Nagoya, she decides to move to Yokohama to continue her studies at Seiso. She stands 155 centimeters tall and has short, light orange or yellow hair paired with green eyes. As a child, Kanade was considered a violin prodigy and won prizes in various competitions. Her grandfather is a craftsman who builds violins, and the instruments that Kanade and her childhood friends use have been made by him.
Despite her early promise, Kanade eventually falls into a creative slump, and her playing is described as lacking personality. This crisis comes to a head after a recital when she receives a short, unsigned letter that simply asks, "Are you going to end here?". Driven by this anonymous challenge and seeking to find her own musical identity, she transfers to Seiso Academy, the same school her childhood friend Ritsu Kisaragi had left for two and a half years prior. Her primary goal at the new school is to grow as a musician, and she joins the orchestra club to participate in the national music competition.
Kanade has an honest and likable personality, described as helpful, light-hearted, and easygoing. She can be somewhat clumsy at times but is also considerate, as she dislikes causing trouble for other people. She is skilled with her hands, being an excellent cook, and her talents in sewing and preparing food are well-regarded by her peers. She has a quirky interest in browsing and collecting containers for food items like honey and jam.
Within the story, Kanade is the protagonist, and her journey focuses on her struggle to overcome her musical slump. A significant part of her development involves uncovering the mystery behind the letter she received. The author of the letter is Reiji Myoga, a musician from a rival school whom Kanade had met years earlier at a competition. While she has forgotten this encounter, Reiji has not, and he carries a grudge against her. The golden string she possesses as a charm was also a gift from him in their childhood. Her relationship with Reiji is initially cold and antagonistic, as he openly declares his intention to crush her in the concours, but it eventually becomes a central driver for her musical growth.
Her relationships with the Kisaragi brothers are also key. Ritsu Kisaragi is a kind and supportive childhood figure whom she greatly admires and who invites her to Seiso Academy. His younger brother, Kyoya Kisaragi, is another childhood friend who often helps and supports her, particularly when she is being clumsy. Throughout the competition, Kanade develops complex bonds with various other musicians, which help her navigate the emotional and creative challenges she faces.
Kanade performs several notable pieces throughout the series. For her orchestra audition, she plays the Gavotte en rondeau from Partita No. 3 for solo violin by Johann Sebastian Bach. She performs the piece Melodie or Souvenir d'un lieu cher by Tchaikovsky, both as a solo and in collaboration with pianist Sei Amamiya. With the Seiso orchestra, she performs the Winter movement from The Four Seasons by Antonio Vivaldi, as well as Bach's Double Concerto and Mendelssohn's String Quartet Op. 12 No. 1 for the competition.
