Description
Kōha Ren is a central figure within the Kou Empire, introduced in the second season of the anime as the third imperial prince. He is youthful in appearance with an androgynous and delicate build, characterized by long pink hair styled with three braids at the fringe and pale pink eyes. His attire is ornate and deliberately chosen, reflecting a strong personal interest in fashion and beauty. Despite his refined and almost fragile exterior, his nature is drastically different. He is a fierce combatant who revels in battle, possessing a pronounced bloodlust and a sadistic pleasure in defeating his enemies. This violent streak is tempered by a deep, unwavering loyalty toward his family, particularly his older half-brothers Kouen Ren and Koumei Ren, whom he respectfully addresses as Flame Brother and Bright Brother. Kōha’s motivations are rooted in a traumatic past. He and his mother were cast aside by his father, the second emperor, and he spent his early childhood as the sole caretaker for his mentally unwell mother, an existence he later described as being a mother to his own mother. This isolation and abandonment fostered a deep-seated hatred for his father and a desperate need for acceptance. His life changed when he encountered Kouen and Koumei, with Kouen famously accepting him as a true brother by deliberately taking a blow from him. From that point, Kōha dedicated himself entirely to Kouen’s vision of uniting the world under one ruler, viewing himself as a loyal servant and calling Kouen my king. In the story of The Kingdom of Magic, Kōha plays a key military role. He serves as a general in the Western Subjugation Army and is a dungeon capturer, having conquered the fourteenth dungeon alongside Kouen. He is a king vessel of the djinn Leraje and also a chosen candidate of the magi Judar. His most prominent role in this season is as a frontline commander during the Kou Empire’s invasion of Magnostadt. During the journey there, he shared a carriage with the young magi Aladdin and formed a genuinely friendly bond with him, showing a more playful and affectionate side when he allowed Aladdin to play with his hair. His key relationships extend to his personal attendants, JunJun, ReiRei, and JinJin. He personally sought out these marginalized mages, offering them a place and purpose when they were rejected by the world. He treats them with a possessive and proud affection, and they in turn hold him in near-worshipful regard. His relationship with the protagonist Alibaba Saluja is more complex, marked by a degree of rivalry and distrust following a diplomatic meeting with Kouen. Kōha’s development throughout the narrative involves a gradual expansion of his loyalties from his immediate family to his self-chosen army, whom he fiercely protects. He is deeply affected by the deaths of his soldiers, experiencing genuine rage and grief. Notable abilities stem from his metal vessel, the sword Nyoiren-to, which houses the djinn Leraje. This sword can extend and retract at will, allowing for both sweeping area attacks and a defensive barrier to shield his allies. He can perform a djinn equip transformation that grants him crystalline wings and a new weapon form. His ultimate technique, the extreme magic, generates a massive circular gravitational wave that crushes everything within its range. Later in the broader story, following a failed civil war, Kōha is exiled but survives the conflict. He matures significantly, his earlier volatility softening into a calmer demeanor, and he physically grows taller in his later appearances, though throughout the events of The Kingdom of Magic he remains a small, deadly, and fiercely loyal prince driven by a need for belonging and a love for combat.
