TV-Series
Description
Hakuryuu Ren is a prince of the Kou Empire, specifically the fourth prince, who endures a profoundly tragic past. As a child, he was caught in a massive fire during a revolt in which his father and two older brothers were killed. In his final moments, his eldest brother, Hakuyuu Ren, revealed that the true culprit behind the disaster was his own mother, Gyokuen Ren. This revelation forced the young prince to carry a heavy secret as he grew up, protecting his older sister, Hakuei Ren, by hiding the truth from her while bearing the physical proof of that night in the form of a large burn scar on the left side of his face.
Initially, Hakuryuu presents himself as a serious, courteous, and affable individual who deeply worries over small matters. He is humble and respectful, acknowledging the wrongdoings of his empire and even apologizing for the actions of his countrymen. This honorable exterior, however, masks a deep-seated insecurity and an intense hatred born from the trauma of his childhood. He struggles with a severe inferiority complex, often comparing himself to his powerful friends like Alibaba, Aladdin, and Morgiana, and feeling insignificant because of his perceived weakness. This complex fuels a relentless determination to grow stronger on his own, refusing shortcuts or the aid of the magi Judar, whom he initially distrusts due to his association with the corrupt elements of the Kou Empire.
However, following an encounter with the witch Umm Madaura, which reawakens suppressed memories of his mother, Hakuryuu undergoes a dramatic and dark transformation. His existing hatred intensifies, and he comes to embrace a brutal philosophy: that hatred can never be erased, and the only solution is to erase the objects of that hatred. He rejects the words of those close to him, viewing their concern as a hindrance to his mission, and becomes willing to commit immoral acts to achieve his goals of killing his mother and taking over the Kou Empire. He begins to see his former friend Alibaba as a manipulative hypocrite and finds a kindred spirit in Judar, accepting his fate and his own dark path. From this point, his actions become ruthless, including decapitating an enemy and slaughtering his sister's adversaries without mercy.
Hakuryuu's central role in the story is driven by his quest for revenge against his mother, Gyokuen Ren, who he holds responsible for the deaths of his father and brothers. His secret mission, which he reveals to King Sinbad, is to find an ally to help him tear down the current Kou Empire, which he believes is controlled by the organization Al-Thamen. He forms a pivotal alliance with Judar, and together they conquer a second dungeon to obtain the Djinn Belial. This leads to a violent revolution within the Kou Empire, culminating in a civil war where Hakuryuu wages war against his own family, including his cousin Kouen Ren, to seize the throne. His path culminates in a devastating confrontation with his former allies, resulting in the apparent loss of his friend Judar and Alibaba's soul being sent to another dimension, leaving Hakuryuu guilt-ridden and remorseful.
Despite his turn to darkness, Hakuryuu's character shows significant development. After achieving his goal of becoming emperor, he finds that neither joy nor satisfaction awaits him. He is haunted by guilt and remorse for the many people he killed, and, unable to bear the sight of Kouen being executed, he chooses to exile his cousin instead. He ultimately accepts that he does not need to rely on his hatred to achieve his goals, signaling a move away from the all-consuming vengeance that defined his journey.
Throughout the series, Hakuryuu maintains several key relationships. He treasures his older sister, Hakuei Ren, above all others, seeing her as his last remaining family and seeking to protect her from the truth about their mother. He develops a deep, unrequited affection for Morgiana, whose strength and kind nature he deeply respects, prompting him to propose to her and promise to make her his empress one day. His friendship with Alibaba is particularly complex, beginning with mutual admiration before deteriorating into a bitter clash of ideologies. Finally, his relationship with Judar evolves from disdain to a powerful alliance built on their shared sense of being cursed by fate.
As a fighter, Hakuryuu is highly skilled with a spear, his agility allowing him to use it effectively in short-range combat. He is also a remarkably capable strategist, able to devise complex plans to defeat much more powerful enemies. As a King's Candidate, he is one of the few characters in the story to possess and control more than one Djinn. His first Djinn, Zagan (of Loyalty and Purity), grants him power over life magic. This allows him to create living organisms, manipulate microscopic organisms as weapons, and generate vegetation. After losing his left arm to an enemy, he uses Zagan's power to create a functional wooden prosthetic to replace it. His second Djinn, Belial (of Truth and Conviction), gives him the terrifying ability to manipulate the minds and five senses of his targets, enabling him to brainwash people or permanently sever a limb and banish the senses associated with it to another dimension.
