Description
Pino is a mysterious woman who serves as the guide program and operating system of Valvrave 01, the unit piloted by Haruto Tokishima in the anime Valvrave the Liberator. She appears only within Haruto's Valvrave, manifesting as a cheerful-looking girl with very long blonde hair and green eyes. During most of the first season she remains mute, and it is only in the first season's finale that it is revealed she is capable of speaking like a normal human.
As the Valvrave's guide program, Pino is closely tied to the pilot and exercises considerable influence over him; among the Valvrave systems, she seems to have the strongest control over Haruto. On multiple occasions, after guiding the pilot to choose to abandon his humanity, she assumes control of his body. Her role is therefore both supportive and unsettling, as she presides over the transformations and personal costs demanded by the machine.
Her relationship with Haruto is central to her appearances, since she exists only within his machine and accompanies his experience as a pilot. She also serves as a source of truth for the people around him; Shoko Sashinami learns from Pino that Haruto became a Kamitsuki in order to avenge Shoko's presumed death, a revelation that clarifies the reason behind his transformation. Pino's development across the story is mostly linked to such revelations, moving from a silent presence within the machine to a being who can communicate directly and meaningfully with the human characters.
Her notable abilities include acting as the Valvrave's operating system, managing the unit's guidance functions, holding authority over the pilot, and possessing his body when the pilot relinquishes his humanity. She is defined by her mysterious origins and by the fact that she is bound to a single machine and pilot rather than appearing across the series' other Valvrave units.
