Description
Hiyori Iki is a junior high school student whose life takes an unexpected turn after a traffic accident. While trying to save a strange young man from being hit by a bus, she is sent flying herself. This near-death experience causes her soul to become partially detached from her body, leaving her as a half-ayakashi, a being with one foot in the world of the living and the other in the Near Shore, the realm of spirits and phantoms. This condition manifests as a cat-like tail that connects her wandering spirit to her unconscious physical body, leading to unpredictable out-of-body episodes she calls her snooze attacks.

Hiyori is defined by her strong sense of justice and her caring, almost maternal nature. She is stubborn, energetic, and fiercely protective of those she considers her friends, often putting their well-being before her own duties and obligations. While generally a sweet and pure-hearted individual, she has a very short temper, especially when provoked by Yato's antics. She is also confrontational and will not hesitate to speak out against what she sees as wrong. Outside of her supernatural predicament, Hiyori is an ordinary girl with an extraordinary enthusiasm for professional wrestling and video games. Her genuine and grounded personality makes her the emotional anchor of her social circle, both in her human life and in the divine world she has stumbled into.

Her primary initial motivation is to find a way to return to being a completely normal human, a wish she hopes the reckless god Yato can grant. However, as she becomes more involved in his life and his struggles, her goals shift. She develops a deep commitment to helping Yato achieve his own dream of becoming a widely worshipped god of fortune and to protecting the troubled spirit Yukine, who becomes Yato's Regalia, or weapon. Her role in the story is pivotal, as she is the audience's entry point into the world of the gods and phantoms. She serves as the emotional core and the practical glue that binds the chaotic god Yato and the anguished young spirit Yukine into a functional family.

Her most significant relationships are with these two. Initially, her connection with Yato is a transactional one, but it quickly deepens into a close friendship built on mutual trust and care. She is often the more mature one, grounding his wild schemes and supporting his ambitions, even the most childish ones. Over time, this bond evolves further, and she eventually admits to herself that she has fallen in love with him. With Yukine, Hiyori takes on a distinctly sisterly or motherly role. She is patient and encouraging, helping him with his studies and defending him from Yato's harshness. She plays a crucial role in his ablution, a ritual to purify a corrupted Regalia, saving him from turning into a monstrous ayakashi. For this, Yukine is deeply grateful and sees her as one of his most important people. She also maintains a normal life with her close human friends, Yama and Ami, who support her through her frequent snooze attacks.

Throughout the series, Hiyori undergoes significant development. She starts as a girl merely trying to fix a problem that has befallen her, but she transforms into an active, courageous, and self-sacrificing participant in a dangerous supernatural world. She willingly puts herself in harm's way to save her friends, and her unwavering belief in Yato provides him with strength and a sense of purpose he has never had. Her condition improves and worsens over time, and she faces the very real possibility of losing all her memories of her friends, a fate she fights against with all her will.

As a half-ayakashi, her notable abilities are tied to her soul's separation. When in her spirit form, Hiyori exhibits superhuman strength and agility, far beyond that of a normal human. She is also able to see and interact with gods, Regalia, and phantoms, which are normally invisible to the living. Despite her physical prowess, she has no formal fighting technique and usually attacks with wild, powerful strikes, often incorporating moves inspired by her love of professional wrestling. Her physical human body, left unattended during these episodes, remains unconscious and vulnerable until her soul returns.
