TV-Series
Description
Professor Sicômoro, known in English as Professor Sycamore and in Japanese as Dr. Platane, is a recurring character in the Pokémon anime during the Kalos saga, appearing throughout Pokémon the Series: XY and XYZ. His full name is Augustine Sycamore, and he serves as the Pokémon Professor of the Kalos region, working from his laboratory in Lumiose City. He is a middle-aged man with black, curly hair, bluish eyes, and light facial hair that runs along the sides of his face and under his ears.
Professor Sicômoro's background is defined by his dedication to research. He specializes in the study of Pokémon evolution and change, with a particular focus on Mega Evolution, a subject on which he is regarded as a leading researcher and about which he has written a book. In his younger years he studied under Professor Rowan of the Sinnoh region, and he maintains connections with other established researchers. He personally raised a Garchomp as his main partner, having obtained it as a Gible for the purpose of studying Mega Evolution, and he is responsible for providing starter Pokémon to the young trainers of Kalos. In the anime, he gives a Froakie to Ash, a Fennekin to Serena, and a Chespin to Clemont when they begin their journeys.
In terms of personality, Professor Sicômoro is a helpful and warm-hearted man who frequently aids others whenever the need arises. He remains calm and determined even in tense situations, especially when the welfare of a Pokémon or the bond between a Pokémon and its trainer is at stake. He is openly enthusiastic about Pokémon and loves to share that passion with others. His cheerful nature can sometimes make him somewhat naive or distracted, but he is sincere in his desire to support trainers and to deepen the understanding of the relationship between people and Pokémon. One trait that sets him apart from most other Pokémon professors is his willingness to challenge trainers to Pokémon battles himself, a habit he enjoys as a genuine lover of the battles themselves.
His primary motivation is to understand how Pokémon evolve and change, and especially how strong bonds between trainers and Pokémon enable phenomena such as Mega Evolution. He wants to help young trainers form healthy, meaningful partnerships with their Pokémon, and he supports them with guidance, equipment, and encouragement. When Mega Evolution is exploited for harmful purposes, he is moved to act in defense of the Kalos region and its inhabitants.
Within the story, Professor Sicômoro debuts in the episode "Lumiose City Pursuit!" when Ash, Clemont, and Bonnie bring an injured Froakie to him. From that point onward, he acts as a recurring mentor and researcher, offering Pokédexes and starter Pokémon, hosting events such as a summer camp, and advising the main characters on matters related to Mega Evolution. As the series progresses, his research becomes intertwined with the schemes of Team Flare and its leader Lysandre. Professor Sicômoro had once been a close friend of Lysandre, and the revelation of Lysandre's true intentions is a personal blow to him. In the final confrontation, he stands alongside other defenders in the protection of Lumiose City, showing that his sense of responsibility extends beyond the laboratory.
His key relationships include his deep partnership with his Garchomp, which he raised from a Gible and cared for over time. He also mentors Alain, a trainer who collaborates with him on Mega Evolution research, and he entrusts starter Pokémon to Ash, Serena, and Clemont, remaining a supportive figure throughout their adventures. His academic lineage ties him to Professor Rowan, and his friendship-turned-conflict with Lysandre is one of the more significant personal dynamics in his story arc.
Over the course of the series, Professor Sicômoro develops from a cheerful, somewhat carefree researcher into a figure who must confront the weight of his own field. The bond between him and Garchomp is tested when Team Rocket attempts to force a Mega Evolution and causes chaos around Prism Tower; after the crisis, he continues to care for Garchomp, and when he eventually obtains a Garchompite, Garchomp successfully Mega Evolves through genuine trust rather than force. His involvement in the battle against Team Flare marks a clear point of growth, as he reconciles his love of research with the dangers of its misuse.
In terms of abilities, Professor Sicômoro is a skilled and capable battler, unusual for someone in his position. His main Pokémon, Garchomp, is his constant partner and is capable of Mega Evolution. He keeps the original Kanto starter Pokémon, Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle, and has used them in battles. Beyond his practical skills as a trainer, his greatest assets are his expertise in Pokémon evolution and Mega Evolution, his published research, and his ability to observe and nurture the bonds between Pokémon and their human partners.
