Description
Grant is the Gym Leader of the Cyllage City Gym in the Kalos region, specializing in Rock-type Pokémon. He makes his first appearance in the anime not at his own gym, but at the Battle Chateau, where he is seen climbing the venue's walls while waiting for his turn to battle. At the time, he holds the noble rank of Duke. He engages in a battle against Viola, the Gym Leader of Santalune City, and his Onix defeats her Surskit, earning him the promotion to Grand Duke. It is during this encounter that his identity as the Cyllage City Gym Leader is revealed to the protagonist Ash Ketchum and his friends.

Grant possesses a calm and decided demeanor, maintaining a cool and collected presence even in the heat of battle. His most defining characteristic is his intense passion for climbing, to the point where he is described as having a "crazy obsession with walls". He often finds creative ways to incorporate climbing into his daily life, such as scaling the walls of the Battle Chateau. This hobby is more than a pastime, as he draws a direct parallel between the sport of climbing and the nature of Pokémon battles, viewing both as challenging ascents that require strategy and determination to overcome. His physical appearance reflects his athletic lifestyle, featuring dark, spiked hair and gray eyes. His sleek, black climbing gear and the small, colored stones embedded in his hair give him a fashionable and trend-setting look that is popular among the young people of Kalos.

Grant's primary motivation as a Gym Leader is to seek out and battle Trainers with strong hearts and the will to challenge themselves. This philosophy is put to the test when Ash arrives at the Cyllage Gym seeking his second badge, the Cliff Badge. Demonstrating his unorthodox approach, Grant presents Ash with a choice: take the elevator to the battlefield or scale the gym's sheer wall. Ash chooses to climb, a decision that Grant respects as it shows the challenger's spirit and gives him a chance to observe his opponent. In the match, Grant uses his two known Pokémon, the massive Onix and the rampaging Tyrunt. He employs a strategic style using moves like Rock Tomb and Draco Meteor, not just to cause damage but to create obstacles on the field, controlling the flow of the battle much like a climber navigates a difficult route. Unlike many other Gym Leaders, he does not restrict Ash to using the same number of Pokémon, allowing him to deploy his full team. After a hard-fought battle, Ash manages to overcome his strategy, and Grant concedes defeat gracefully, awarding him the Cliff Badge and expressing his hope for a rematch someday.

Beyond his role as a gym leader, Grant participates in the larger story of the XY series during the crisis caused by the villainous Team Flare. He is shown among the other Kalos Gym Leaders who form a defensive line in an attempt to stop a massive, destructive Megalith from approaching Anistar City. Viewing the defense line as "just a big wall that needs to be climbed," he and his Pokémon work in concert with the other Gym Leaders, combining their attacks and fighting off the enemy's roots to clear a path for Ash and his allies. This reinforces his role as a reliable and powerful ally in the Kalos region.
