He makes his first appearance in the anime not at his own gym, but at the Battle Chateau, where he is seen climbing the venue's walls while waiting for his turn to battle. At the time, he holds the noble rank of Duke. He engages in a battle against Viola, the Gym Leader of Santalune City, and his Onix defeats her Surskit, earning him the promotion to Grand Duke. It is during this encounter that his identity as the Cyllage City Gym Leader is revealed to the protagonist Ash Ketchum and his friends.
