Description
Haiji Sawada first appears as a quiet, grey-haired member of a group of middle school delinquents who mock Masayoshi Hazama during his earliest days of operating as Samurai Flamenco. His presence in that initial encounter seems minor, but he later reveals it was profoundly impactful for him, leading him to obsessively repeat the word "flamenco" to himself ever since. He operates under the guise of having died from an illness a year prior, a ruse his parents agreed to and helped maintain, which allows him to move undetected.

Personality-wise, Haiji is defined by an intense, possessive, and deeply unsettling obsession. He is socially awkward and has trouble forming healthy connections, directing all of his passion and need for significance onto the figure of Samurai Flamenco. Rather than seeking inspiration from the hero, he becomes determined to become his nemesis, believing that heroes cannot exist without villains. His actions are manipulative and gaslighting, designed not only to hurt Masayoshi physically but to make him and those around him question their own sanity. He is an expert at staying under the radar, to the point that his existence is initially doubted by others and even questioned by Masayoshi himself, who briefly considers that Haiji might be a figment of his own imagination.

Haiji's primary motivation is to feel special and to forge an unbreakable bond with Masayoshi, the person who gave his previously passionless life meaning. His goal is to transform Masayoshi into Samurai Flamenco Darkness, an anguished anti-hero, by giving him a tragic backstory. To achieve this, he systematically attacks everyone close to Masayoshi, including the Flamengers and other allies, through acts of arson, assault, and poisoning.

In the story's final arc, Haiji serves as the most personal and arguably most disturbing antagonist Masayoshi has ever faced. Unlike previous world-conquering villains like King Torture or Alien Flamenco, Haiji is a mundane yet terrifying threat: a stalker whose weapon is psychological torment. His campaign of terror includes uploading the first videos of Samurai Flamenco to the internet, destroying Masayoshi's apartment, shoving a friend down the stairs, running over Kaname Joji with a truck, and poisoning members of the idol group Mineral Miracle Muse. His actions force Masayoshi to confront a crisis that cannot be solved by simply punching the villain.

Key relationships are central to his character. His entire being revolves around Masayoshi Hazama, whom he is obsessively "in love" with in a twisted and possessive way. He sees Hidenori Goto, Masayoshi's best friend, as a key tool to hurt Masayoshi, going so far as to torture Goto by manipulating text messages from his missing girlfriend. His parents are a notable but off-screen part of his background, having enabled his deception by helping fake his death.

Over the course of his confrontation with Masayoshi, a form of development occurs, though not a traditional redemption. Masayoshi refuses to become the dark hero Haiji desires, instead facing him not as Samurai Flamenco but as Masayoshi Hazama, a naked and vulnerable human being, and accepting his twisted version of love. This unexpected reaction leaves Haiji bewildered. Following his defeat, during which he is physically beaten by Mari (as Flamenco Diamond), Haiji is institutionalized in a juvenile facility or mental ward. Even there, he vows to come after Masayoshi again, though Masayoshi welcomes this future confrontation on the condition that he leaves his friends alone, giving Haiji a small measure of peace and showing his obsession is understood if not condoned.

Haiji possesses no superpowers but has notable abilities in psychological manipulation and stealth. His expertise lies in staying under the radar, faking his own death, and carrying out crimes that are realistic and difficult to trace, such as tampering with food, arson, and vehicular assault. His primary tactic is to create doubt and fear, eroding Masayoshi's support network and mental state from the shadows. He has green hair and brown eyes.
