Description
Angela Burton is an American otaku and a friend of Kanako Ohno from the time Ohno lived in the United States. She comes from Boston, Massachusetts, and first appears in the story when she travels to Japan with her friend Susanna Hopkins, primarily to attend the Comic Festival doujin event and reunite with Ohno.
In terms of appearance, Angela is tall and athletic with short blonde hair and blue eyes. Her figure is large and glamorous, similar to Ohno's, though Ohno notes that her own chest is bigger. Angela has a strong and outgoing personality that can be startling to those meeting her for the first time, contrasting sharply with the more reserved Sue. She is exceptionally friendly, mature, and unusually open about her interests as a fan, able to declare her fetishes in public and describe them in explicit detail without embarrassment, a trait possibly influenced by her American upbringing.
Angela is a dedicated and knowledgeable otaku with diverse tastes. She has a particular fondness for the series General Gyororo and enjoys both male-oriented and female-oriented doujinshi. She also has a strong fetish for glasses-wearing characters, which leads her to feel some attraction to the nervous Kanji Sasahara, known for his glasses, upon their first meeting. Her Japanese language skills are limited, primarily consisting of basic self-introductions and specific terms like sou-uke, meaning total bottom, which she likely picked up from her interest in yaoi doujinshi. However, she demonstrates a basic comprehension of spoken Japanese, as she sometimes makes comments in English about conversations happening around her.
Her role in the story is that of a recurring supporting character who brings an outside perspective to the Genshiken club. Her arrival with Sue shakes up the clubroom's atmosphere ahead of Comic Festival. Her athleticism is a notable ability; she can endure the physical demands of all-day doujin events and cosplay photoshoots better than even seasoned cosplayers like Ohno. This physical stamina allows her to accomplish more during convention trips than her companions.
Regarding key relationships, Angela shares a close friendship with both Ohno and Sue, traveling internationally to meet them. She develops a particular interest in Harunobu Madarame due to his character traits. She genuinely wishes for his happiness and the possibility of forming a romantic relationship with him, although he often misinterprets her forward actions as mere jest. Her open nature extends to her views on relationships; she does not consider casual encounters to be a significant matter, a perspective that sometimes surprises the more reserved Japanese club members.
As a character, Angela does not undergo significant development, as her appearances are limited. However, she serves as a contrast to the Japanese otaku, demonstrating that passionate fandom exists across cultures with different social expressions. Her openness as a fan and her physical presence as an attractive, athletic, and outspoken female otaku challenge certain stereotypes within the subculture. She also shows a perceptive side, being described as sensible when it comes to understanding the feelings of others, even if her behavior sometimes suggests otherwise. Her interest in both male and female oriented doujinshi marks her as having a more fluid engagement with otaku genres than some of her Japanese counterparts.
