TV-Series
Description
Lucy Yamagami is a young woman with neck-length black hair, brown eyes, and round glasses, distinguished by a single ahoge on the right side of her head that moves according to her mood. She joins the Mitsuba Ward Office as a new civil servant in the Health and Welfare Section. Her motivation for becoming a public servant is rooted in a personal grievance: her parents, unable to settle on a single name for her at birth, listed all their ideas on the registration form, resulting in an absurdly long legal first name. The bureaucrat who approved this name without question became the target of her search for revenge.
Lucy is a hardworking and serious individual, making her an ideal civil servant despite her initial lack of genuine interest in the job. She is cautious in her actions, prioritizes avoiding mistakes over shirking responsibility, and is dedicated to following rules and procedures. She is notably sensitive about her name and becomes angry when anyone refers to her by her full first name or any abbreviation beyond the simple Lucy. In early appearances, she is described as drier and more rigid, contrasting with her later development.
Her role in the story is that of a new employee whose personal quest gradually becomes intertwined with the everyday workings of the office. She serves as a grounding point among eccentric coworkers, providing a perspective through which the audience observes the workplace. Her key relationships include Yutaka Hasebe, a talented but lazy colleague who teases her constantly and eventually becomes her love interest. Despite his pranks, Hasebe proves capable and supportive, and Lucy develops genuine feelings for him over the course of the series. She forms close friendships with fellow new recruit Saya Miyoshi, who is gentle and observant, and veteran temporary worker Megumi Chihaya, who acts as a mentor and attempts to involve Lucy in cosplay. She also interacts with her supervisor Taishi Ichimiya and other office members.
Lucy's development centers on her evolving feelings about her name and her relationships. Initially fixated on revenge, she gradually realizes that her coworkers are well-meaning, and she becomes more open to social interactions. Her romantic arc with Hasebe progresses from annoyance to mutual affection, culminating in a confession and their eventual relationship. She discovers that Hasebe's father was the official who approved her name, leading to a temporary conflict that resolves through communication. By the end, she decides to change her legal name but keeps Lucy as it is what Hasebe has always called her and has become special to her.
Among her notable abilities, Lucy demonstrates competence as a civil servant despite her insecurities. She is highly diligent and capable of managing front-desk duties, though she struggles with citizens who are demanding or dismissive. She is an avid reader, prioritizing books over other expenses, and has a weak tolerance for alcohol. Her physical insecurity about her large bust is a recurring theme, but she does not view it as an advantage. The ahoge on her hair acts as an involuntary emotional indicator.
