Description
Hajime Obi is a character from the Beam Saber arc, remembered as the former head coach of the Shimura family's dojo, Koudoukan, and a beloved older brother figure to Shinpachi and Tae Shimura. A sword genius whose talent was known throughout Edo, he studied under the siblings' father, Shimura Ken, and became the dojo's head coach at a very young age.
His life took a tragic turn when he was chosen to study martial arts in space. During his departure from Earth, a teleportation device at the terminal exploded, an accident that warped him to the distant Planet Biimu. The explosion destroyed half of his body, killing him, but the native Amanto of that planet used their advanced technology to revive him as a cyborg. Presumed dead by everyone back home, he spent his years travelling the galaxy, learning new sword techniques, and gaining the title of Galaxy Sword Master.
Upon returning to Edo, Obi Hajime presents the outward appearance of a cheerful, energetic, and affable man. He is almost always smiling, displaying a trollish sense of humor and a deep, caring affection for the Shimura siblings, whom he considers his own family. He affectionately calls Shinpachi Shin Boy. This joyful exterior, however, masks a profound inner turmoil. His body is now integrated with mechanical parts, the right side of his face marked by a large scar running from his forehead, across his blind right eye, down to his ear. This cybernetic reconstruction came at a great cost: his body contains an interstellar beam cannon, a weapon programmed by the Amanto to fire when a specific planetary alignment occurs, effectively turning him into a doomsday device that would frame Earth for starting a galactic war.
The mechanical components of his body are tied to an alternate personality known as Kenofi. While the human Hajime is kind and wants to protect Edo and those he loves, the Kenofi persona is cold and ruthlessly obeys the destructive programming of his creators. This internal conflict between his human heart and his machine directive is the central struggle of his character. He holds deep regret for having left the dojo, believing he abandoned Otae and Shinpachi to carry the burden of their family's legacy alone. He is largely unaware that he was Tae's first love, and when he returns, he mistakenly believes that Sakata Gintoki is her boyfriend, whom he views as another student of the Tendoumushin style.
In his role within the story, Obi Hajime initially appears as a returning hero, recruited by Tae to help reopen the dojo by teaching a new, modern beam saber style. However, as his mechanical nature and the terrifying weapon hidden within him are revealed, he becomes a tragic antagonist that the Yorozuya must confront. His key relationships are the driving force of his narrative. His bond with Shinpachi and Tae is the primary anchor for his humanity. In his final duel with Shinpachi, it is the voices and memories of his loved ones that allow him to temporarily regain control from the Kenofi persona.
His development culminates in a final act of redemption. Unable to fully deactivate the cannon, Obi Hajime exercises his free will as a samurai. He turns the weapon away from Earth and aims it at the ship of the Biimu Amanto, destroying both the vessel and himself in a sacrificial explosion. His last thoughts are of his time with the Shimura siblings, and a grave for him is later placed next to that of his mentor, Shimura Ken.
As a fighter, Obi Hajime is exceptionally skilled, having mastered the Tendoumushin sword-fighting style. His cyborg enhancements grant him superhuman strength, allowing him to fight on par with someone like Gintoki. His most notable abilities come from his body's mechanical functions: he can generate a beam saber from his hand, fire destructive laser beams from his eyes, and unleash a massive blast from the cannon integrated into his chest.
